From Coolest Gadgets: Command & Conquer coded in HTML5

There are moments in life when we look at a particular object and think, “Now why didn’t I think of this before?” I am quite sure that many of us who spent our teenage years in the mid-1990s would have played the game Command & Conquer at some point in time or another, where the almighty tank could be stopped by something as simple as sandbags, and had hours and hours of fun honing our RTS skills in front of the computer. Well, a hardcore coder decided that playing the game today on a legacy system is just too mainstream, and coded the entire Command & Conquer in HTML5, where the entire thing runs on 69k of Javascript.

Aditya Ravi Shankar built the clone as part of his attempt to improve his coding skills, where he gave himself an entire month to do so, building the game in the browser while going through the original game’s files in order to get sprites, sounds and specs just the way it was. According to Shankar, “In hindsight, I might have wanted to take smaller steps and make a tower defense game instead of jumping directly into an RTS. Trying to do the whole thing in under a month all by myself wasn’t the smartest idea.”

Still, he got the job done, and there were some glitches here and there during testing, such as tanks getting stuck in the sea, and it works best in Chrome or Firefox. If you want to help improve Shankar’s work, check out the source code here.

Gametel Bluetooth Portable Games Controller for Android Devices!

I don’t know why it hasn’t come out earlier… or anyone else has tried to jump into this market. It may have been a niche market before but now, I think it has a great future!  What am I talking about?!  I’m talking about wireless game controllers for Android devices!  :-D  While I love touchscreen features, there are plenty of games (my current favorite, Zenonia series) that would be much better with a controller…

Well, Gametel seems to have stepped up to the plate.  But I have a good news and bad news.  It’s a great device!  Bad news?  It’s only currently available in England!  :-(  You can get it for £49.99 on Amazon.co.uk.  Here’s one of the first reviews by Droid Den… and it seems promising… guess I have to wait for it to be available in US!

My Favorite Podcasts

This is the 21st century folks.  Let’s make that clear.  With that, things are moving to all sorts of new directions.  One of those is a new style of show distribution called “podcasts”.  It’s a talk show of sorts that talks about just about anything.  Here are some of current favorites that I recommend.

Car Enthusiasts

  • Car Talk – By far the best car-related podcast anywhere…. hands down!
  • Autoblog – A great resource of new cars and other related things.

Consumer Technology

  • Engadget – A very entertaining way to keep on top of new tech on a weekly basis.

PC Gaming

  • PC Gamer – Entertaining way to keep up to date with the PC gaming world.
  • Gamers with Jobs – If you can stand their dirty mouths, these guys are very honest and fun to listen to

Curiously Odd Habits

It started when we visited H-Mart.  JJ had asked me which color he should pick: white or green.  I had no idea so I said green.  Then he started hopping on only the green tiles.

I didn’t teach him this stuff but it came out.  I remember my younger days and creating a game out of it myself to jump only from a shadow to another shadow, or to step only in particular tiles or shapes.  Here is JJ doing the very same thing but I hadn’t even mentioned it!  I was so enticed on how kids can play and how certain habits and ways of playing  just get passed down genetically.

I played with him of course and he’d complain every now and then how green tiles seemed so far from each other.  It’s really good to be a kid… and I am so glad that JJ is enjoying his childhood… even if he doesn’t quite realize it.  I hope he and Anna will continue to have fun being kids.  It only lasts a short time anyway…
