IBM’s tiniest computer is smaller than a grain of rock salt

IBM has unveiled a computer that’s smaller than a grain of rock salt. It has the power of an x86 chip from 1990, according to Mashable, and its transistor count is in the "several hundred" thousand range. That’s a far cry from the power of Watson or the company’s quantum computing experiments, but you gotta start somewhere. Oh, right: it also works as a data source for blockchain. Meaning, it’ll apparently sort provided data with AI and can detect fraud and pilfering, in addition to tracking shipments.

The publication says that the machine will cost under $0.10 to manufacture, which gives credence to IBM’s prediction that these types of computers will be embedded everywhere within the next five years. The one shown off at the firm’s Think conference is a prototype, of course, and as such there’s no clear release window.

If you watched Last Week Tonight‘s segment on cryptocurrency, err, last week and were left wondering how we’d build an even bigger worldwide blockchain network from where we are now, well, this seems like a logical starting point.

World’s largest SSD capacity now stands at 100TB

World’s largest SSD capacity now stands at 100TB

http://ift.tt/2u7oGz2

That didn’t take long — just a month after Samsung released a record-setting 30TB SSD, a rival has claimed the throne. Nimbus Data has unveiled the ExaDrive DC100, which crams 100TB of 3D flash memory into a standard 3.5-inch SATA form factor. For context, that’s 20 million songs (if you assume 5MB each) in a device small enough to fit into your home PC. Not that you’re about to buy one, unfortunately.

As you might guess, this is intended for servers where capacity takes priority over everything else, including performance (the 500MB/sec is nothing to write home about). A data center could hold 100 petabytes of data in a single rack instead of needing large swaths of server room space. That’s helpful for cloud services, AI and other technologies that may need massive amounts of data.

And then there’s the cost. When the DC100 ships in the summer, it’ll have pricing comparable to other business-grade SSDs "on a per terabyte basis." That likely means a price in the tens of thousands of dollars, which is enough to give pause even to those companies that can afford it. While the drive should be trustworthy enough, that’s a lot of money (and a lot of data) to lose if one goes bad. Think of this more as a peek at the future of SSDs than anything else.

Facebook plans all-staff meeting on Cambridge Analytica scandal

Facebook plans all-staff meeting on Cambridge Analytica scandal

http://ift.tt/2FKzN6e

Facebook is holding an open meeting for all of its employees today, in the fall out of the unfolding Cambridge Analytica data privacy scandal. Taking place at 10am PT, the meeting will be led by Facebook’s deputy general counsel Paul Grewal, and will give employees the opportunity to ask questions about the ongoing case, which involves the data harvesting of more than 50 million people.

According to an internal calendar invitation seen by The Verge, the meeting is slated to last just 30 minutes, with one source suggesting the move is merely a "stopgap" measure designed to buy time before the all-hands meeting on Friday, which will allegedly be led by CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

Zuckerberg has come under fire for remaining silent on the matter so far, but it’s clear the company has significant concerns about what the revelations mean for it going forward. Today’s meeting, which is also being live-streamed for remote staff, will be the first time a large group of Facebook employees have had the opportunity to question the company’s leadership in person. If Facebook is as culpable as reports suggest it is, its staff are not going to be happy being viewed as complicit in the matter.

A self-driving car operated by Uber struck and killed a pedestrian in Tempe, Ariz. The incident could be the first pedestrian death involving a self-driving vehicle.

The car was in autonomous mode, but had a human riding along to take control of the vehicle if necessary, The New York Times reported. Several reports indicate the pedestrian was a woman, who was immediately transported to a local hospital where she died.

Uber has suspended all autonomous vehicle operations in Pittsburgh, Tempe, San Francisco and Toronto in response to the crash.

In a statement provided to NPR, Uber said, “Our hearts go out to the victim’s family. We are fully cooperating with local authorities in their investigation of this incident.”

Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi referenced the “incredibly sad news out of Arizona” in a tweet and reaffirmed that the company will cooperate with local law enforcement.

Requests for comment from the Tempe Police Department were not immediately returned.

The National Transportation Safety Board said it was sending a team to investigate the incident.

The Weinstein Company Holdings LLC announced that it has filed for voluntary bankruptcy and entered into an agreement to sell its assets to a Dallas-based equity firm.

It also announced that it is ending all nondisclosure agreements that prevented victims of alleged sexual misconduct at the hands of disgraced Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein from talking about their experiences.

The Weinstein Co. will enter into a “stalking horse” agreement with an affiliate of Lantern Capital Partners in conjunction with entering into bankruptcy proceedings.

“Under the agreement, Lantern will purchase substantially all of the assets of the Company, subject to certain conditions including approval of the Bankruptcy Court. The Board selected Lantern in part due to Lantern’s commitment to maintain the assets and employees as a going concern,” said the company in a statement released late Monday.

But it was the second and third paragraphs of the statement that is likely to draw even greater attention in light of the many women who have come forward to accuse Weinstein of sexually harassment and abuse.

“Today, the Company also takes an important step toward justice for any victims who have been silenced by Harvey Weinstein. Since October, it has been reported that Harvey Weinstein used non-disclosure agreements as a secret weapon to silence his accusers.

Effective immediately, those “agreements” end. The Company expressly releases any confidentiality provision to the extent it has prevented individuals who suffered or witnessed any form of sexual misconduct by Harvey Weinstein from telling their stories. No one should be afraid to speak out or coerced to stay quiet. The Company thanks the courageous individuals who have already come forward. Your voices have inspired a movement for change across the country and around the world.”

The announcement comes after a group of investors, led by former Obama administration official, Maria Contreras-Sweet, tried and failed to purchase the assets of The Weinstein Co. earlier this month. That deal, which would have re-invented the firm as a female-run company, collapsed upon the discovery of debt previously unknown by the investors.

Weinstein has been accused of raping or sexually assaulting many women over decades.

New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, who has brought suit against The Weinstein Co., Harvey Weinstein and his brother, Bob Weinstein, issued a statement praising the announcement.

“This is a watershed moment for efforts to address the corrosive effects of sexual misconduct in the workplace. The Weinstein Company’s agreement to release victims of and witnesses to sexual misconduct from non-disclosure agreements—which my office has sought throughout this investigation and litigation—will finally enable voices that have for too long been muzzled to be heard.”

Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey began a push three years ago to attract makers of self-driving cars to the state and actively wooed Uber away from California as a venue for testing those vehicles.

Shortly after his election in 2015, the governor signed an executive order supporting the testing and operation of self-driving vehicles that he said was about “innovation, economic growth, and most importantly, public safety.”

Now the “public safety” part of that order has been thrown into question and Arizona’s willingness to become a testing ground for emerging driverless vehicles has come into sharp focus after Sunday’s incident in which a self-driving Volvo SUV operated by Uber struck and killed a 49-year-old woman who was walking her bicycle in Tempe.

As we reported Monday, the car was in autonomous mode at the time of the crash, around 10 p.m., but had a human riding in the passenger seat to take control if necessary. The incident is now under investigation.

The year after Ducey’s executive order, Arizona seized on a chance to steal a bit of driverless thunder from Silicon Valley. California had just ordered Uber to stop testing its autonomous vehicles on the streets of San Francisco until it obtained the proper testing permits. Uber balked and Arizona stepped in.

“Arizona welcomes Uber self-driving cars with open arms and wide open roads,” Ducey said in a statement in December 2016.

“While California puts the brakes on innovation and change with more bureaucracy and more regulation, Arizona is paving the way for new technology and new businesses,” the Republican governor said.

For its part, Uber pledged to expand its self-driving pilot program in Arizona and said it was “excited to have the support of Governor Ducey.”

Arizona has also welcomed other companies working on driverless technology, leading The Arizona Republic to proclaim last year that “With major testing by Waymo, Uber, General Motors, Ford and Intel, Arizona is more than holding its own in the race to attract the self-driving car industry.”

The newspaper highlighted the fact that metro Phoenix was one of three places in the country that people could hail a ride in a self-driving Volvo from Uber (with human co-pilot) and that there were enough of them around the city that “their bulky rooftop sensors are now a common sight.”

In 2016, Uber’s self-driving cars were also made available to rider’s in Pittsburgh, Pa. where regulatory barriers are also minimal.

But some safety advocacy groups have been less enthusiastic.

In a statement on Monday, the non-profit group Consumer Watchdog described Arizona as “the wild west of robot car testing.”

The group said there is “no regulation in place,” in the state. “That’s why Uber and Waymo test there. When there’s no sheriff in town, people get killed.”

Despite the criticism, however, it is not yet clear exactly what went wrong on Sunday. The National Transportation Board and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration say they will investigate.

While the Tempe Police Department has declined to determine fault yet, the city’s police chief, Sylvia Moir, told The San Francisco Chronicle that from viewing videos of the collision taken by the car’s onboard cameras, “it’s very clear it would have been difficult to avoid this collision in any kind of mode (autonomous or human-driven) based on how she came from the shadows right into the roadway.”
