Scale: It’s similar to school grade system… 6/10 is failing so it’s not worth seeing. 7/10 is barely passing. 8/10 and higher is where it’s at!
1) Noir – This is by far one of the most intense and quite original series. My wife and I enjoyed the unque style, deep plot twists, and great animation to the end. My top rated recommendation! 10/10
2) Gundam Seed – Another one in the series. It’s ok. Better character development and concentration than others. Interesting plot twists. 8/10
3) Chobits – Interesting series and take off on “mobile computers”! It’s able to combine plot and character developments, but still falls a bit short on the delivery. By the end, I felt a bit… empty as it just didn’t feel like it was enough. 7/10
4) Full Metal Panic – a mech-themed anime similar to Gundam series but w/o the whole mass conflict. It tries to be romantic a bit but fails at that quite miserably. Some episodes are rather good though with the main character’s development and history being revealed appropriately. 8/10
5) .hack // DUSK – I know it’s not the first in the series, but ah well… Anyhow, it’s an interesting-but-eh series, with the premise of two kids entering virtual game world. Oooh… I just watched it to get to the end… Not worth your time. 6/10
6) Cowboy Bebop – Per Canned Lizard’s request (and my forgetfulness), I am also adding review of this AWESOME series! Don’t bother with the movie, mind you, as it is rather oddly “not as good” as the series. It’s got your Indiana Jones, Captain Kirk (kinda), and all sorts of cool characters evolved into one! No spoilers… plot is cool and so is the sound track!! Very retro ’70′s and jazzy!! Almost perfect!! 9/10
7) Trigun – Which brings me to this series! You know, one thing I’ve noticed in many many animes is that the main character (which are male) tends to be idiot-savant!! Bebop is… and so is this cool character, Trigun!! Make no mistake, he has style… indeed. It’s ridiculous at times, I know. But hey, that’s why this is anime… Still great plot twists and plenty of weird/but/cool action to go with it! Not to mention his wacky character!! 9/10
8) Naruto – Another series that confirms my theory on male idiot-savant theory! Here’s a wacky cool character kid (why can’t he be adult though?!! ) that learns to become a powerful Ninja! Very very cool indeed!! Deep intricate plot… though they tend to drag the episodes on more than necessary. Awesome, simply awesome besides that. 9/10
9) Hunter X Hunter – Even better than Naruto in fighting anime is this awesome series! He has such a child-like pure heart that it even made my wife cry! Gon, the main character, is simply awesome to follow! This blows Dragonball series away!! 10/10
10) Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water – A simply amazing imagination brought to life in this “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” meets sci-fi setting, Nadia portrays the life around a simple girl’s fate and future as they unfold right before your very eyes along with a smart but nerdy boy! It’s a classic all the way!! 10/10
11) Master Keaton – Another great instant classic! This reminded me of “Pineapple Army” comic series, and it turned out to be by the same artist! Keaton is your Sherlock Holmes meets MacGyver meets Indiana Jones! Great plots and awesome episodes! Highly recommended! Watch one and you will not regret it! 10/10
12) Neon Genesis Evangelion – Talk about going biological! This combines the classic mech/robot animes into new realm with biological mix! It started off interestingly with lots of mystery and plot twists, but as the plot unfolds in the later episodes, things get very weird as the series gets VERY VERY philosophical about humanity. The ending was just too bizarre for me, but some of you may dig it. 8/10
13) RahXephon – An anime that feels like a mega bad trip. This is quite similar to Neon Genesis Evangelion in that it’s also quite philosophical in its message and also mixes in that whole “biological” approach to mech animes. RahXephon is a bit more confusing, especially at first, but as you unfold more episodes, it’s less weird. It’s more enjoyable than N.G. Evangelion, but still… leaves more to be desired. 8/10
14) Serial Experiments: Lain – Talking about “trippy” animes, here’s another that leaves you feeling all puzzled and trippy. At least in the beginning. This is about a girl who discovers that she’s more than who she thought she was. In near distant future, people can get “wired” to the ‘Net (ooh… sounds so novel!) but series of weird circumstances and people dying reveals much more. It also leaves you feeling empty as well. I thought it was trying to be a bit too unique! And this just feels like a bad hangover or something… 7/10
15) FLCL – Standing for “Furi Curi” (loosely), this is by far the wackiest anime I’ve seen thus far! The concept is out of nowhere and takes a while in this mini-series to figure out what’s going on! This revolves around a boy with power to bring super weapons from another dimension (w/o his control) and another really wacked girl who is in search of a lost love… and power. Honestly, if you are new to anime, skip this one and save it for later. Much later. 6/10
16) Rurouni Kenshin: Legendary Swordsman – A story set in feudal Japan turning just into late 19th Century, it tells the story of a legendary swordsman Kenshin. Nothing too original but still great story and entertainment, but series does get a bit boring sometimes. Once again, another idiot-savant main character but he’s all hero. 8/10
17) Outlaw Star – The so-so sci-fi journey of a misfit group to seek the ultimate power, the idiotic main character is out to start off as a bad boy in search of some kind of redemption. It’s entertaining at best but hey, that’s what it’s about, right? 8/10
18) Dragonball Z – The anime that is perhaps the most popular of all time, this classic loosely-based Chinese story entails of a monkey-like boy’s adventure that encompasses the universe and then some! Very funny and awesome, but also very lengthy! Quite a classic. The downside is that they drag the fights really really long! 9/10
19) Castle in the Sky (“Tenku no shiro Raputa”) – My favorite anime movie of all time by my favorite anime creator of all time, Hayao Miyazaki! Classic tale of a girl being chased by evil man with purpose only to control & destroy, Sheeta meets a courageous boy named Pazu who after overcoming his feeling of shortcomings, goes out to save the girl and the world! Sheer beauty! 10/10
20) Future Boy Conan – An old series (from the ’70′s) by Miyazaki that is quite similar in theme in line with “Castle in the Sky”, it tells of post-apocalyptic world where men have destroyed Earth and few remnants fight to save what is left of it, while those with power still try to get a hold of the girl that holds to secret power (nuclear powered bomber). Hilarious at many times as well as classic. 9/10
21) Ah! My Goddess! – A romantic tale of a boy who wishes so hard that he gets a pretty protector. This tells of young college boy’s adventure and his falling in love with his protector. Quite beautifully told, it’s a great one to watch with your beloved one. 9/10
22) Grave of the Fireflies – A very very sad view on post-nuclear bombing area of Hiroshima entailing the brother and sister’s struggle to survive the post-bombing times leading to eventual tragic ending. This is not for a faint-hearted as it’s rather graphic, not in the sense of visual pictures, but of the emotional one. My wife and I cried very badly afterwards. Major tear-jerker. Excellent story-telling. 9/10
23) Akira – Another very famous anime movie that opened the road for anime to invade the West. Another post-apocalyptic setting with story around a bunch of kids who turn out to have specially messed up powers. This is definitely not PG, and I’d say at least R rating for its graphic nature. If the director intended to draw horrible possible future, he has done it very well. Though very entertaining at times, I can’t say it’s excellent as it is just series of worse and worse violence with some meaning. 8/10
24) S-Cry-Ed – This is your “Akira” meets “Dragonball” meets [place your fav scifi anime here]. With a paranormal event tearing Japan, new generation of kids appear with strange molecular manipulative powers. This breeds for fear (and desire) from the main gov’t of Japan and destruction of these power users begin. Pretty interesting. Nothing to cry over or dance for joy though… other than just trying to be “unique” (which it fails at). 8/10
25) Spirited Away – Yes, everyone knows about this movie. It is Miyazaki-san’s (fyi, “san” is a title added to someone you respect and/or older in Japanese culture) work after all… However, is it just me who didn’t “get it”?!! It was just too odd for me to appreciate it. There were great moments and all, but starting with his “Princess Mononoke”, his movies became difficult to understand. I just couldn’t get into it either… 7/10
26) Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind – A beautiful manga (manga is a collection of comics) series that was horribly put together as an anime movie! I read the entire series and it was a beautiful story warning us of our abusing the nature. However, in being translated into the two-hour version movie, lots got lost. It’s just bad. Most of you will still probably enjoy it though… Very creative animation and imagination fills this movie. 8/10
27) Princess Mononoke – Miyazaki-san brought back “Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind” into feudal Japan setting. Instead of Princess Nausicaa, it is Princess Mononoke, and just plain much weirder… and graphically sad atmosphere. It again carries his never-ending warning message on how we should care for our environment. Just not that great… even as Miyazaki’s loyal fan. 7/10
28) Mobile Suit: Gundam Wing – Another popular series in Gundam, this iteration was nothing special nor spectacular if you had seen the Gundam series before. There is a deeper character developmental focus, and quite similar in that regard to the newer “Gundam Seed”, but still I only watched till the end for the sake of completing the series. 7/10
29) Record of Lodoss War – A fantasy setting anime that gives you a feeling of RPG adventure, this series was quite entertaining. But if you knew RPG’s in general, nothing was special. 8/10
30) Tenchi Muyo – I am referring to the first of the series. All the subsequent “re-iterations” stunk! But this first one was awesome, great character mixing, good plot development, and wacky but cool scifi drop. Our hero is able to become a stud AND save the universe at the same time!! I thoroughly enjoyed this first series. Don’t bother with other ones like “in Space” or “in Tokyo” etc.. They just become stupider. 8/10
31) Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade – Talk about waste of my time! Cover totally threw me off as there’s not much action or scifi! It rather describes what goes on inside the head of this high-profile soldier who kills a resistance girl and “snaps” and changes his ways. Great dramatic style, but just disappointing! 6/10
32) Gasaraki – An interesting mix of scifi/nature/supernatural/etc anime series. The series does a good job of leaving you hanging as long as possible in a good way. Still had a weak ending, but that may be because I was getting fond of this series. It’s quite enjoyable still. 8/10
33) Martian Succesor Nadesico – Well, I must admit, starting this series was rather rocky. Very slow and boring start. Lame, plainly put. But I decided to give it a shot. It’s only 26 episodes after all!! But after 8 or so episodes, things started to … fit. I have to give the creators of the series credit for making this series such a great misfit of laughter, plot, fun, and thought! I was expecting all the typical robot anime stuff… but not only does this have a robot anime within itself, but the series was AWESOME!! I don’t wanna give it away… but just hang in there with the slow start and you will thank me later! Very different yet homey… It feels like you’ve seen it before… yet you hadn’t! Very well thought out. 9/10
34) .hack // Sign – The prequel to “.hack // Dusk”, this explains the “legendary” characters. It’s very confusing at first and takes a while to pick up on the plot, but once you do, you are somewhat mesmerized by it! I was! I wanted to know things turned out! However, it had a rather weak ending! I wish the ending was bit more conclusive!! It still was good enough I’d say… It has very “Noir”-like atmosphere and music! Overall, it was pretty decent. 8/10
35) Samurai Deeper Kyo – Ah… the stuff that makes us men, men! Awesome awesome plot!! The story of two men intertwined trying to discover themselves and their past! Awesome samurai fighting techniques! I want to delve more into it.. but I’m afraid that I’d spoil it for you guys!! If you want the best in samurai action with intense plots and chracters, this is it for you! I just had to finish it today!! 9/10
36) Voices of a Distant Star – A rare treat. Beautifully made… and all by one single person! I saw this at local Blockbuster’s!! Sure it’s only 30 minutes, but it’s some of the best 30 minutes you will ever see!! Beautifully sad story surrounding a girl and a boy who are separated by light years. Visually stunning as well as very thought provoking. I wish this guy would make more!! 10/10
37) Wolf’s Rain – This was such a promising series!! Awesome tale revolving around four wolves that meet by fate (or coincidence… whatever) and start a search and a journey for a place called “Paradise”. Only a “flower girl” holds the key… mix of sci-fi and modern world and fairy tale along with great character development and story-telling comes this awesome anime series! Or at least until the end!! What weak and pathetic ending that was!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ahhhhh!!! I as an audience deserve better than this!! It could’ve been 10/10 but due to such nasty disappointing ending, … 8/10
38) Witch Hunter Robin – An intriguing plot… unique to say the least, this series focuses on alternate views on “witches”. Very well done in somewhat noir way, it entails the story of a unique person Robin. It was alright… just lacked the punch towards the end. Still very entertaining… 8/10
39) X – What kinda title is that, you ask? Well, see for yourself! It’s a tale loosely based on apocalyptic end of the world! Duh! But done in Japanese style! It’s whacked… but it’s somewhat entertaining still. It entails good character development, along with rather touching love stories told inbetween, and excellent plot developments and plot twists… only to be ruined by a rather pathetic ending. That did it for me… I don’t know what’s with these anime’s (like “Wolf’s Rain”, see above) but they stink it for people like me who want great endings for great series! A dud for what could’ve been quite awesome! Just put out the fuse for me at the last minute of the series! 8/10
40) Haibane-Renmei – An anime depicting possible purgatory-like environment, this is a story surrounding an angel-like humans known as Haibanes. They come from nowhere and live in a wall-surrounded town. The plot is rather slow, but rather emotional… and sometimes thought-provoking. It wasn’t terribly exciting or very “drawing” in that it doesn’t make you interested in it too much. Just eh… but great animation visually. 8/10
41) Royal Space Force: Wings of Honneamise – Again, a movie I rented while back, graphically and plot-wise an excellent anime movie. A simple story of a young man’s dream to go into space, it depicts and captures the dreams of mankind excellently. Very inspirational, which is something you can’t say of too many animes of today. 9/10
42) Great Teacher Onizuka (GTO) – Ah… it gives me a sense of renewal after so many generic and un-authentic anime series after the other. This is truly a fresh breath of air to any anime fan that wanted something different! It’s wacky… almost offensive at first… until you understand the seriousness of this once-gang-member-now-turned-22-year-old teacher! Though he’s a pervert, his heart as a teacher is at the place where any person (now or in the past) would love to be his student! This 43-episode series is truly awesome, almost made me cry every time Onizuka won each heart of his students back! There’s no sense of lie or deception in him! Shucks, I am writing way too long… ’cause it reminded me of what a great anime is like… at the same time, touch me right here in my heart! Go see for yourself!! 10/10
43) Get Backers – An interesting twist and plot off of a duo who live off of doing jobs to get back things for people… 100% track record. Decent concept and execution. Writers have good sense of humor and so do the artists! It’s rather decent. The plot deepens as you learn of each of the main characters’ history, Ban and Ginji. Both with special powers (who doesn’t these days?!), they help those in need… and themselves in the process. Recommended. 8/10
44) Blue Gender – Another scifi series about “alien” creatures known as Blue attacking and destroying mankind. Though somewhat original, it is rather graphic about its nature, so it’s definitely not for faint at heart. It portrays the struggle for human survival when there seems to be a new evolved humans who seem to be fast and strong enough to kill these Blue. Kinda weak still if you ask me, and not very exciting to watch through and the touch of originality fades quickly along with the plot. Just a plain “eh”. 7/10
45) Scrapped Princess – What a surprise!! This one seems like your typical fantasy-based anime… until you start getting really into the series!! It will lift you out of the boredom! It was awesome!! Sweet surprise!! Great plot with quite deep development and great characters all around. This entails around a princess who was abandoned and searched to be killed for a prophecy that states that she will bring destruction to the world. What unveils from there is sheer anime genius! Watch all 24 of them and you will see… and appreciate it! 9/10
46) King of Bandit Jing – Ah… this is a short 13-episode series on the “greatest thief of all time”. It’s got a quirky thing going for it… but not anything fantastic to go goo-goo over… Ends rather abruptly towards the end of the series… can only guess it wasn’t popular enough to continue. 7/10
47) Secret of Cerulean Sand – Rather similar to “Nadia – Secret of Blue Water”, this anime portrays a story around a girl who wants to fly, and her brothers in search of secret Floating Liquid. It is based on 19th century era but it’s rather slow and though my wife enjoyed it immensely, I for one didn’t care much for it. In fact, I was rather annoyed a lot throughout the series… 7/10
48) Last Exile – Ah… another great anime series that just boils your blood up for excitement! This was simply one of the most beautifully done anime ever… with great action scenes, great characters, and the plot that was done rather well… even to the end. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It entails a boy and a girl who lost their fathers, and flies the skies to live. What unfolds is a journey that would not only change their lives, but of their world. Hands down, this gets… 10/10
49) E’s Otherwise – A group of espers are the center of this story. An esper who just simply wants his sister to get better finds out that his “benefactor” group isn’t so good. However, story and action is nothing that stands out and leaves you feeling for more… Not horrible… just not excellent. 7/10
50) Tokyo Underground – Another less thrilling, so-so adventure that surrounds a place that existed under Tokyo for several hundred years… it again tells a story about a young girl known as “Maiden of Life” that possesses ability to waken life and young clueless hero. It would’ve been decent except that it just grew weaker as time went on and the ending was just too weak! Not worth my time! 6/10
51) Spiral: Bond of Reasoning – A rather intriguing and “fresh” experience in this already tightly occupied world of anime, Spiral is a detective/mystery series surrounding a young boy genius who is awesome at his reasoning and deducing. His brother’s disappearance gets him involved with a group of special children called “Blade Children” and though it ends somewhat without actual conclusion (maybe they will have a sequel!), it’s very refreshing to see a series that is not a cliche’. Very recommended… 8/10
52) Now and Then, Here and There – Now, here’s a very mature theme anime… this is definitely not for faint at heart. This entails a boy who meets a strange girl by the name of La-la-ru and gets teleported to another world. There, Shu, our hero begins his journey and uncovers a sinister mad man, Hamdo. This series portrays the evil that is within all humans, no matter how “good” some may seem. Yet at the same time, it also portrays the good that is in some people. Despite the killings, violence, destruction, rape, and hatred, Shu draws a picture of how humans can be if we all just live for the good of it, and not focusing on the evil and the bad. Once again, this is a very mature theme. A highly thought provoking anime. 8/10
53) Juuni Kokki (Twelve Kingdoms) – What appeared as another stupid anime fantasy/sci-fi series ended up being much more than I ever hoped for! This series is awesome simply for such in-depth character development, intricate plot, and subtle excellence towards just a plain good story-telling! Our heroine Youko is taken into a different world and asked to be the empress! What follows is a very deep and thought-provoking series that leaves you wanting to know and see more and more. I highly recommend this … the only sad part is that the producers left it unfinished… but at least the ending is somewhat complete in itself. 9/10
54) Read or Die (R.O.D.) TV Series – It started with a 3-part OVA series with a “paper user”, someone who can manipulate paper and use it as weapon. Then it hit the TV series. And I have to say that I am very glad that they did that! It’s a very unique take on a “bloated anime market” of late. Quite interesting with extensive complicated plot and great character development. I got so attached to the characters by the end, I was sad to see it end. But watch it, you must… Entertained, you will… Hmm… 9/10
55) Argento Soma – Hmm… why must we always go to these biomechanical “alien” being/robot stuff??!! Neon Geon started it… others picked it up on it, and Argento Soma is not an exception. Huge alien robots/beings arrive to Earth and is assumed to be hostile. The story unfolds from there… with what seemed like a great artsy start. Art work is rather good actually, esp. on human characters. However, it lost my interest very quickly as it became very generic with the ending being rather… puzzling. Not another “aliens are part of us now, let’s go into space to greet them” series. Oh, yeah. It takes itself way too seriously. I just wasn’t pleased at all. 6/10
56) GTO (Great Teacher Onizuka) Live Action TV series – Usually, I don’t get very interested nor excited when some anime series become “live”… with actual people as in actors and actresses. Why? Because they usually stink… But then again, GTO isn’t your regular typical anime either. In fact, this live action TV series surpasses in some senses, the anime series. Sure the plot is more condensed than either the manga or the anime and is shorter (only 12 episodes), but there’s quite a few things to note here. First, the guy who plays the role of Onizuka sensei does it very well… and in my humble opinion, does it better than the anime character! I sure didn’t expect that… and all the characters are done so well… It was so engrossing, in fact, that I ended up staying the night till 4:30 am to finish watching them all!! I just couldnt’ stop!! But I guess it’s also rather personal because of how much I wish I had teachers like Onizuka sensei… Even with lots of things set aside, it’s awesome! Go and see it now!! 10/10
57) Geneshaft – After humans try to annihilate themselves, people decide to use genetic manipulations to perfect the humanity. In that road, a mysterious ring appears surrounding the Earth and people begin to attack it. The plot surrounds a ship designed out of alien blueprint and with mechanical arms that are pretty much copy of a space mech of [fill in with your favorite robot anime like Gundam]. What starts off as kind of intriguing series goes towards less interesting route and tries to be more philosophical … again. If I wanted good philosophical book, that’s what I would do, read the book, and not learn it from an anime. The only good thing about this series was that it was 13 episodes, which made it less painful. Nothing interesting to see here people… move along…. 6/10
58) Gungrave – It was a great start… cool characters with rather good plot. Excellent plot development with good mix of suspense. However, the middle was slowing down… a lot. Ending wasn’t quite up to par either. But in the end, it still was rather an enjoyable series. I’d still say it’s worth your time. It could’ve saved itself if it made itself shorter, but ah well. 8/10
59) Peace Maker Kurogane – A true samurai/ninja story… and a plot surrounding two brothers who start out seeking revenge but ends up as men. It’s a bit slow at times in pace, but is awesome to the end. Nothing fancy nor flashy, … just solid classic work. 8/10
60) Infinite Ryvius (ree-vye-us) – As I watched this scifi series based on a group of space cadets that get stranded in a space ship that turns out to be some sort of secret cruiser, I immediately thought of this: “This is ‘The Lord of the Flies’ in space!” Why? Because it is, only there are several hundreds this time, and in a space ship in solar system. What started off as not-so-special evolved into a great story of humanity at its worst and its finest. The deep riches of the character developments is by far one of the best thus far. The ending is expected, but was still a delight. 9/10
61) Chrno Crusade – A rather… intriguing twist of another “what if…” where this time, it’s the classic evil vs. good, but with a twist. A demon by the name of Chrno is rescued from nothingness but at the cost of her life being drained. The girl, in search of her brother, becomes a nun… a special one who hunts demons! It kinda works, but it’s not very strong. The plot tries too hard and in the end, it just becomes vanilla: just eh. The ending was rather weak, I thought, but it wasn’t cheesy happy ending like I expected! So it’s worth a seeing… 7/10
62) Tokyo Godfathers – Of all movies, this has to be one of the most bizarre ones out there. This is a story around 3 homeless people, all with different stories, who are “entrusted” with a baby newborn as they find her among the trash. (Don’t get me started! Who the hell would throw out a baby?!! Erg!!) Sure the way the story unfolds may seem way too far-fetched, but they do it so well and without spoiling the plot or the movie either!! Sure this has nothing to do with Samurais or sci-fi, but so what?!! This surprising jem is worth seeing for anyone who has a heart! 9/10
63) Kino’s Travels – The stories are rather strange at first, but you soon realize that beyond the simple life of a young traveler, lies the stories of humanity both at its worst and its finest. This entails a story around a young girl who travels across the world just to see what other countries are like. People and the places she encounter are rather unique but like I said, this 13-episode series touches on the humanity’s dark side and reminds us of how dreadful people we can be. 8/10
64) Full Metal Alchemist – A rather peculiar alternative world scifi-meets-magic world where alchemy has found a place. This entails a story of two brothers who lost their mother and father to unfortunate events… or are they? This takes on a very interesting journey of self-discovery and displays true love between these two brothers who sacrifice all kinds of things to save each other. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the struggles and the beauty of the mankind and it captures the human struggles rather well. It’s not for the faint at heart though as in the process of capturing the human struggles, it also portrays a little too well of these… Even so, I was impressed with the way it captures all things into the series well. 9/10
65) Monster – A masterpiece psychological thriller that rings true to humanity’s worst nightmare, this gigantic thriller is NOT for the faint at heart. It entails of twin siblings who are separated and a horrible experiment gone wrong as the male sibling becomes a “monster” capable of almost anything. Enter Dr. Tenma, a brilliant brain surgeon but his choice to save a life changes his life entirely! It’s awesome thriller to the end! But like I said, be warned of its content as it draws just too well of the true humanity! 9/10
66) The Third – A very reminiscent series on “Noir”, this entails a plot surrounding a girl of mysterious power in the post-apocalyptic setting where an alien species known as “The Thirds” control the world and how it unfolds. It was ok but a bit typical and way too romantic (in the literal sense) on the plot. A bit too simplistic I suppose… but ok. 7/10
67) Oban Star-racers – Though anime at heart, you could sense that this was not entirely a Japanese production. There is a strong but clear anime flavor that one can sense. This story portrays a story of a broken-hearted girl who only wanted her father to recognize her and take her back, but turns into an intergalactic race for human survival. Though well drawn and made, plot wasn’t as original or thorough as it could have been. 7/10
68) Elemental Gelade – With soooo many animes out now, it’s hard to see any original ones anymore. This isn’t much different I’m afraid. It’s yet another a guy-who-falls-in-love-with-another-pretty-damsel-in-distress… who turns out to be a super creature with power to change the world. It could’ve been decent… if it came out 10 years ago! Big disappointment of sameness again… 6/10
69) Bokurano – Though it may seem another Gasaraki, RahXephon, Gundam, or Neon Genesis Evangelion at first, it proves itself by being different from the others by focusing on the beauty of humanity and love for others. This has two great twists in the plot, and you just have to get over the slow & typical sounding beginning. It also focuses on the lives of 15 children who become the heroes of the world, only to find out eventually, that there’s too much cost. The theme is quite mature so be prepared and is definitely not for kids under 15. 8/10
70) Overman King Gainer – It started off rather promising… basing things in another possible world where trains control power. And robots known as Overman with Overskills rule the world. It was interesting until it brought back bio stuff into the plot… just like Neon Geon Evangelion and other bio-mech series. It was just a blah experience for me… 7/10
71) Prince of Tennis – Gotta hand it to the Japanese people for making an uninteresting subject like tennis, and turn it into addictive turn of events! Enter a junior high student, Echizen, who takes on as a freshman to change the tennis courts and leads the school to national level. This has a great mix of characters and evolving plots and character developments that I had hard time letting it go! Sure things get repetitive at times and it is a bit frustrating seeing the tennis matches as a slide show as they tend to “freeze” the shots and not draw it in fast paced sequences like it should’ve been, but they still manage to deliver. Sure it’s a far-fetched story but that’s why it’s so much fun! Think Dragonball meets tennis! 8/10
72) Tide-Line Blue – Set in a similar setting to the classic “Future Boy Conan”, it’s a setting of post-apocalyptic world where water has risen to sink most of the civilization. Enter two brothers, Keel and Teen, who face each other and their past to save the humanity. It’s a bit slow paced at first, but it’s a decent breath of fresh air while keeping the same sentiments from the original the same. Would I watch it again? Nope. 7.5/10
73) Armored Trooper Votoms – Pailsen Files – This reminded me of the PC game from late ’90s by the name of “Heavy Gear”. People piloted mechanized robot suits, and here we encounter a group of people who seem to have a special gene that allows them to survive practically anything! So naturally, the army tries to experiment to figure out if it’s really true or not. It unfolds in a great manner and I rather enjoyed watching it. Though graphics may not be the best, it surpasses in the plot and character development department. 8/10
74) Innocent Venus – At first it seems like just another mech/human anime but this has a twist to it with good character developments and plot twists that made it interesting. On top of that, they didn’t drag it out like it could’ve been. I overall enjoyed the anime series. 8/10
75) Zipang - Anime based on a warship that travels back in time to WW II era and the struggles it faces in trying not to meddle in its affairs while trying to stay alive. While it began well, towards the end, it tried too hard and ended up being more of a history lesson that fails. 7/10
76) Bounen no Xamdou (Xam’d: Lost Memories) – In an alternate universe setting, bunch of kids survive another terror/war attack but in the process, the main character Akiyuki turns into a super-being called Xam’d. It’s a bit slow at times but it went very well in the directions of character and plot devlopments. Very enjoyable to the point that I wanted to see how it would all end. Again, though it seems a bit cliche, it fared itself very well. 8/10
