I am no artist!

It’s no secret… I’m not an artist nor am I gifted in arts.  So whenever Anna asks me to draw for her, I get stressed.  Today, she asked me, of all things, to draw panties!  And then ribbons!

There are two things she loves:  clothing and accessories!  😀  And she doesn’t just want one either!  She then wants me to draw several!   In this case, 16 panties, and about 50 or more ribbons!  😮  Yikes… But she loves to color them in!  So I have draw over and over, in different colors, the things she wants!  C’est la vie, n’est-ce pas?  I try to remind myself that these are the moments to cherish… and that she just loves it when I do this for her!  It’s one of her love languages!  🙂

CHOICE: Compassion

I thought I’d write this week about each of the CHOICE elements throughout the week as I pray on each topic each day (as Pastor Shawn suggested that we do) but write about something that hits home for me.

Well, in compassion, the first thing that came up in my head is my first year in England.  I was 12 then.  The only preparation I had prior to going to England was learning a few vocabulary words.  In other words, I didn’t know any.  With my father’s decision to attend seminary in England, we followed.  But for a 12 year old, nothing could prepare me for what I was about to face.

Back in ’85, there were no more than 2000 Koreans in England altogether.  Needless to say, I felt alienated.  Being thrown into a school system of unfamiliarity of both place and people, if I were shy before (and I was), I was now hidden.  My more outgoing younger brother had adjusted better than I had.  I just shriveled up and made minimal contact with those around me.  It wasn’t like other kids were trying to make an extra effort to the newcomer either.

Being forced to wear a uniform and this prison-like garment called a necktie, I had no idea of what others asked of me, from me, or about me.  Thus entered my guessing game for the first year.  I call it “Yes no game”.  It is basically taking any question that was thrown at me and I just did a simple guessing at the question and answering either yes or no.  I just watched the lips move.  In fact, my own theory on my personality having developed to the current state is that it was my own adaptation method to be able to deal with the situation.  That’s another story for another time.

So what does this have to do with the compassion?  Plenty.  It still lingers strongly in my head what it felt like those first two years.  They were painstakingly rough and difficult.  For those of you that had grown up in the English-speaking country since infant years, this will not be a picture you can paint inside your mind very well, if at all.  Having gone through this painful process myself was in fact a God-given gift, to be able to share compassion with those that are new to this culture and this language.

You see, I have realized that, over the years, compassion can’t really be had towards the people you do not understand what they are going through.  We all have had our different shares of tough times and difficulties.  But instead of trying to forget about it and shun it, I want to embrace it (yeah, I sound cheesy!) and allow it to help those around me to better embrace the new change that they themselves have to go through.  I pray that we all will.

Pics from WWE Summer Slam!!!

That’s Batista up there!  The last match… she LOVES him!   And she was so happy that his team won!

There she is… the WWE lovin’ granny!!

Another of her favorite… Rey Mysterio!

There’s my poor attempt at “group picture”!

Rey was up against this “King” Booker T.  What a joke…

Dragostea din tei – aka. The Numa Numa craze

So I got bored a bit over the weekend night one day…

So I visit youtube.com to see what is fun to watch… I come across this short video with words “numa #1 fan” so I click it to see… This woman comes on and yells some weird thing about how she is #1 fan of numa!  I’m like, what the…  and this dance beat starts and she goes nuts!  Who is this numa dude, I wonder…

So I click on this numa meta tag and look for other videos.  It turned out that “numa” is part of a chorus of a song called “Dragostea din tei” by O-Zone, an eastern European trio.  The song is catchy… but not much flesh to it.  But the number of home-made badly lipsynced videos to this song is what was hilarious!  Just search for the song title at youtube.com and see for yourself if you are out of it like me!

From Mexicans to Asians, from blacks to whites, everyone was going crazy about this song and making their own videos!  What’s worse than all this?!  It turns out that this “fad” came (and is almost gone) at least a year ago!!  LOL…  I’m so out of it… but it’s a good thing I’m out of it…

Numa numa eh… numa numa eh…

NPR Article: Be careful if you have relatives coming to the States for exchange program!

NPR Article

It states how USA United Student Association, Inc has been mistreating its clients of foreign students.  The NPR article refers to two Korean students who have gone thru near-hellish experiences.  It infuriates me on how there are people like this that abuse these kids!

Go spam their website and let them know how furious you are!  Also, if you have relatives or friends that are planning on coming to the States via exchange programs, make SURE that United Student Association isn’t one of them and to be sure of its background checks!

The Worm Song

So I play a bit more with the kids today and Anna brings over a Sesame Street book and find Oscar. As we talk about Oscar’s dirty trash can, we talked about worms as well and spontaneously, I sang her this song. The original Korean lyrics (written by yours truly) is:

지렁이는 씹으면은 맛이없어요.
씹으면은 물컹물컹 웩웩웩!
Roughly translated, “Worms are yucky if you chew them. If you chew them, slimy slimy, wook, wook wook! (gesture of throwing up)” Well, it was a sure hit! Such a big hit that Anna loved it to death and asked me to sing it only about 100 times!! Then I got so sick of singing it that I decided to record it!! So we recorded it and if it works, it should play when you visit this site!! LOL…

If it doesn’t play and you wanna listen, it’s here at this link.
