I tend to change gadgets a lot more than most people, which means when I visit friends with a laptop or tablet in-tow it’s more than likely not the same laptop or tablet I had the last time I was there.
It’s an occupational hazard, and also an annoyance for friends who have to relay their password to me for the 9000th time, most likely late at night when I suddenly realize I don’t have it. Yes, there are a number of workaround for this problem depending on the gadgets you have on hand, but I recently came across a great one thanks to Gadget Hacks: finding it in my phone using the app WiFi Key Recovery.
If my phone or Android tablet has been connected to the network before (or if I had them connect it when I arrived), then it’s easy to look up what the password is on my own so I can connect other devices as well using the app. Android devices don’t do this by default, but the app works as an easy workaround.
To use it, download the app from the Google Play Store (your phone will need to be rooted) and run the app. You’ll have to give the app Superuser access, but when you do you’ll be able to see all the of WiFi networks you’ve ever connected your device to as well as what the password for those networks is. Passwords are searchable, and you can share them with another device via QR code using an additional app.
The app also offers the option of storing the entire list via a text file. I’m personally a little apprehensive about giving an app Superuser access indefinitely. If you are too, I’d recommend downloading the list and then either uninstalling the app or restricting its privileges going forward. You can always reenable it down the line if you need a rogue password, but you’re not giving the app full reign when you don’t need to.
