Lyft has completed 55,000 self-driving rides in Las Vegas

https://www.engadget.com/2019/05/31/lyft-aptiv-55000-self-driving-vehicle-rides-vegas/

One year ago, Lyft launched its self-driving ride service in Las Vegas. Today, the company announced its 30-vehicle fleet has made 55,000 trips. That makes it the largest commercial program of its kind in the US. Unsurprisingly, Lyft says it’s thrilled. "So far, we’ve been very pleased with what we’ve heard from our passengers taking a self-driving ride with us in Las Vegas," the company wrote in a blog post.

Last August, about four months after Lyft and its partner Aptiv dropped the autonomous vehicles in Vegas, they hit 5,000 rides. According to the company, the average ride rating remains high, 4.97 out of 5 stars. Reportedly, 92 percent of riders felt very or extremely safe during the trip. It might help that program still relies on a backup driver in case the system fails. Though, it’s unclear how often the trips require human intervention.

Compared to Lyft’s overall ridership, 55,000 trips is a drop in the bucket. The company passed the million riders per day mark in 2017, and it later cleared the one billionth ride milestone. While Lyft may have the advantage of a head start and a clean record, Uber recently infused its self-driving car unit with a significant cash investment. It’s not yet clear if Waymo will prove to be a competitor or a collaborator, as the Alphabet company is expanding but will also partner with Lyft to pick up riders in Phoenix. Either way, the fact that Lyft and Aptiv have made it one year and 55,000 trips proves that the self-driving service has staying power.

Six Bioware classics are coming to consoles this fall

https://www.engadget.com/2019/05/31/bioware-baldurs-gate-neverwinter-nights-console-release-date/

A collection of classic BioWare roleplaying games will be arriving on consoles later this year. Physical and digital copies of Baldur’s Gate, Baldur’s Gate ll and Baldur’s Gate: Siege of Dragonspear, Icewind Dale and Planescape: Torment will all arrive in stores on September 24th in North America. Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition will be available on December 3rd. All of the titles will be available for PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.

Game developers and publishers Skybound Games and Beamdog are responsible for bringing the collection of beloved RPGs to new systems. The companies are promising the games will be tailored for consoles, with controls optimized for controllers. All of the games have been given a graphics update and native support for high-resolution, widescreen displays that would have been rare at the time of their original release.

New content has also been added, along with new characters, classes, and player creation options. There are even multiplayer functions in some titles so you can have some nostalgia trips with your friends. Skybound Games and Beamdog say they’ve squashed some old bugs, improved character balance, and spruced up the user interface along the way, as well. Assuming the companies make good on all of those promises, the reimagined classics should have something for gamers new and old to enjoy.

Northrop Grumman Investigates Anomaly from 1st OmegA Rocket Motor Test

https://www.space.com/northrop-grumman-test-fires-omega-rocket.html

A powerful new rocket will get a serious workout today (May 30), and you can watch the action live.

Aerospace company Northrop Grumman will fire the first stage of its OmegA launcher during a pivotal ground test in Promontory, Utah, at 3:05 p.m. EDT (1905 GMT; 1:05 p.m. local Utah time). Watch it live here at Space.com, courtesy of Northrop Grumman, or directly via the company. Coverage begins at 2:30 p.m. EDT (1830 GMT).

“More than 12 feet in diameter and 80 feet long, the OmegA first stage will fire for 122 seconds and produce more than two million pounds of thrust,” Northrop Grumman representatives wrote in a media advisory.

The Virginia-based company is developing OmegA to fly national-security and commercial missions. If all goes according to plan, the rocket will perform its first test flight in 2021 and begin operational launches the next year.

The three-stage OmegA will come in both an intermediate and a heavy-lift version. The heavy variant will be capable of lofting 17,200 lbs. (7,800 kilograms) to geostationary equatorial orbit, according to the OmegA fact sheet.

OmegA began as a project of aerospace company Orbital ATK, which was acquired by Northrop Grumman in 2018.

Google Maps AI helps you discover a restaurant’s popular dishes

https://www.engadget.com/2019/05/30/google-maps-popular-dishes/

Google is trying to take some of the guesswork out of trying a new restaurant. The company is trotting out an update to Google Maps that uses machine learning to highlight the popular dishes at an eatery. Tap on a place and it’ll show the most popular meals in the overview section, with the menu tab showing the most discussed options. If you’re curious to know more (and prevent any rude surprises at the table), selecting a dish will show reviews and photos.

The feature is available now for Maps users on Android. The iOS crowd will have to be patient — it’s deploying to Apple devices in the "coming months." Whenever it does hit your device, it might offer the confidence boost you need to check out an unfamiliar restaurant.

BMW-designed, hydrogen-powered craft is latest entry in ‘air mobility’ derby

https://www.autoblog.com/2019/05/30/bmw-designed-hydrogen-powered-flying-machine/

LOS ANGELES — Developers of a multi-rotor hovering aircraft billed as the first flying vehicle to be powered by hydrogen fuel cells unveiled a full-scale model on Wednesday in Southern California, in a show-and-tell that never left the ground but raised some eyebrows.

A mockup of the futuristic aircraft, dubbed “Skai” by its inventors, was put on exhibit for investors, the news media and other invited guests outside the BMW Group’s Designworks studio in Newbury Park, a suburb north of Los Angeles.

Engineering and avionics for the drone-like vehicle were developed by Alaka’i Technologies, a privately held company based in Massachusetts but named for a tropical forest in Hawaii ranked as one of the wettest spots on Earth. The BMW unit contributed to the craft’s design.

The company touts the Skai craft as a promising new zero-emissions mode of personal airborne transport ideal for Southern California, a region long plagued by smog and renowned for traffic gridlock of epic proportions.

While several carmakers have struggled to bring hydrogen fuel cell technology into the automotive mainstream, Alaka’i describes its invention as the “world’s first hydrogen fuel cell-powered air mobility solution.”

The mock-up displayed on Wednesday, about the size of a minivan, resembles a sleek, five-seat SUV with landing skids and an array of six horizontal rotors attached at the end of arms protruding from the roof of the craft. It was all for looks.

The display model is a replica of the company’s only full-size operational prototype, which is expected to begin remote-controlled test flights soon at the firm’s Massachusetts lab, said Chief Executive Officer Steve Hanvey.

“We’re going to get off the ground imminently,” he told Reuters, adding that assembly was completed weeks ago and that initial Federal Aviation Administration certification is pending.

He said the relative simplicity of the aircraft and its operation compared with conventional helicopters should ease the FAA approval process as development progresses from experimental to commercial production.

Hanvey said he expects to win FAA certification for initial production vehicles by the end of next year, and to make its first aircraft available for sale in early 2021, before ramping up production.

In the long run, the company foresees producing more than 10,000 vehicles a year, with a sticker cost that would “approach the price of a luxury car,” Hanvey said. They will be built in three basic configurations — for taxi or personal passenger flights, for emergency medical transport and for cargo delivery.

Powered by six hydrogen fuel cell batteries — one for each rotor engine — the aircraft are designed for a range of 300 miles but are envisioned mainly for short urban hops or flights between nearby cities.

For safety, they will be equipped with a redundant autopilot system, a propulsion design that can fly with the loss of at least one motor, and a parachute attached to the vehicle’s airframe.

Although FAA rules will require pilot operation, developers expect the vehicles ultimately will be flown autonomously by pre-programmed guidance systems.
