Star Trek Movie: The Bittersweet Review

I grew up on scifi.  It started with Mazinger Z.  Galaxy Express 999.  Future Boy Conan.  Gundam.  Robotech.

Then I discovered Star Trek.  The original TV series with Capt. James T. Kirk.  Spock and others made the show rather enjoyable.  And then the Next Generation came!  Capt. Jean-Luc Picard is da man!  He made Star Trek cool!  I didn’t care much for Deep Space Nine and the Voyager series… but then Star Trek: Enterprise returned and it was awesome again!  However, it wasn’t popular enough and they pulled the plug.

The movies weren’t great most of the time and Star Trek seemed to disappear… until this movie came around!  The reason why the review is bittersweet is because of what the movie is doing to the entire Star Trek license!  Just like “Dark Knight” did to the original (and lame) Batman from the ’60s, this movie kickstarted the Star Trek into the 21st century, so to speak.  The movie was good.  Lots of action and effects with a decent plot, it gave what the license needed to enter the mainstream.  It was great if you weren’t a fan of the original.

So to someone like me who has been a fan, but not a fanatic, it was rather… bitter to swallow.  The plot threw the entire history upside down, like Chung had warned me yesterday.  The original series and some of the movies had always done one thing and one thing right:  addressing a load of ethical and cultural issues and differences.  It had its own … traditions and history of sorts.  Now, it was all thrown away for the sake of making the series popular again.

It still was a good movie and the twist was… intriguing.  I suppose it was a necessary evil of sorts.  I mean, I’d rather have it back this way than to have lost it forever.  Bittersweet, indeed.  Bittersweet.

Do I look like Kung Fu Panda?!

So I got a chance to speak with my sister-in-law (my wife’s brother’s wife) in Korea.  And she said that she watched the movie Kung Fu Panda recently.  Then she started chuckling and started to tell me how the Kung Fu Panda reminded her of me!  Me!  😮

Do I really look like Kung Fu Panda?  Anyway, she went on to say that the panda’s personality also resembled a lot like me.  I have yet to see the movie… so for those of you that have watched it, does the panda really remind you of me?!  Is the panda that ssul-lung?!  😛  I thought that was funny and wanted to share.

The New Bond Movie: Quantum of Solace

I like the new Bond… he’s a ninja with mad skillz! Ok, really, I like his darker character and the portrayal of more realistic scenarios. And the guy plays his role exceptionally well! Well, the new Bond movie is coming out! And it’s gonna be called “Quantum of Solace”!?! What the… Anyway, this should be good!

Princess Bride: The Game!

Wow… many of you know that one of my all-time favorite movies is Princess Bride. What you didn’t know (and neither did I till today!) is that it’s coming out as a game! 😮 That’s … inconceivable! 😛 The game site is live. Here’s a movie of what the game will be like… basically an adventure type game. It’s just too funny… Anyone wanna buy it for me?! LOL…

Chaos Theory (2007): Movie Review

I came across this movie in some what random manner… however, upon watching it, the movie just warmed up my heart… big time. First, big props to Ryan Reynolds for an excellent acting. This is my first time seeing him acting so big so well. And I don’t get impressed often. He was always playing goofy parts (ie. Scrubs and Two Guys, a Girl, and a Pizza Place). Yet, here he is playing a very serious role of a father and a husband.

And the plot is even better. One that should touch anyone’s heart, of love and betrayal. But for some reason, the ending was the best for me… and the favorite part, I took out and personally typed it up in this quote… Frank Allen is the character that Ryan Reynolds plays, the main character…

Franik Allen: It turns out there are few things that are more chaotic than that of a human heart. Speeding up, slowing down, pretty face, flight of stairs, it’s always changing no matter what happens. It’s an erratic son of a bitch. But underneath all that bump to bump mess, there is in fact, a pattern, the truth. And it’s love. Most important thing about love is we choose to give it. And we choose to receive it, making it the least random act in the entire universe. It transcends blood, it transcends betrayal, and all that dirt that makes us human. If you can figure that out, Jake’s got nothing on you.

That is huge. And so true. I pray that we will also choose to give and receive love. I give it 8/10.

Scout: Korean Movie Review & Politics

I came across this Korean movie entitled “Scout“.  It was about a guy who worked at a university as a baseball scout.  There was a up-and-coming talent from Kwang-ju.  So how can you go wrong with a sports movie, right?!  Wrong!!  🙁

Shoot… don’t wanna mess up your plot but let me point out that it does bring up and rotate around the infamous Korean massacre from 1980.  It was called “Kwangju Massacre“.  Since the Korean general Chun Doo-hwan took over the government via power and coup d’état, Koreans took it upon themselves to protest against the power.  This happened in the city of Kwangju.

I am more than furious about this … watching the movie reminded me of it… now, of late, I have been hearing how they miss both loser “presidents”… Park Chung-hee and Chun Doo-hwan did some nasty and terrible stuff and if I ever hear again how they miss some of these worst humans ever, I’m gonna explode!!  If you are willing to exchange food for people’s lives, you are …. erg.  Forget it.
