From Gizmodo: MythBusters Was Banned from Talking About RFID Chips Because Credit Card Companies Are Little Weenies

Boo!!! MythBusters stopped?! Inconceivable! Grow a pair credit card companies!!

======================================================

RFID chips are super cool because those little buggers can beam things wirelessly. The guys at Mythbusters totally thought so too and wanted to make an episode about how trackable and hackable RFID chips were. Sounds amazing! Everyone would’ve learned more about the technology that’s invisibly invading our lines. But, nope. Credit Card companies banned ’em. More »

Verizon Wireless Leads Industry in Customer Care? Really?!

According to J.D. Power & Associates survey, Verizon is leading in customer care… Really?!

You see, I have been a loyal customer for almost a decade.  You’d think that they’d treat you well for loyalty… well, no!  😡 I got a new phone (Droid Charge) back in end of October just a day before I left for work.  I figured I’d have few days left (I was going for 2 weeks) if I wanted to exchange the phone.  The phone was crap.  Slower and crappier than its predecessor, Droid X.  And since I didn’t want to be without a phone while I was on travel, I decided to call in when I returned.

Big mistake. It turns out the 14-day return period begins from the day they SHIP IT OUT!  WTH?!  I kept complaining and they eventually said that they’d let me swap it out with HTC Thunderbolt (which is way better!).  They would re-imburse me later on once I ship back Droid Charge.  Well, they didn’t come through and after much crap, I was given the short end of the stick!  I was beyond mad.

I am thinking about not renewing my contract.  I tend to be very loyal… unless you screw me over big time.  Verizon did.  But my other problem is… who would I switch to?!  Surely not AT&T!  No thanks…  Sprint?  Too much doubt…  erg…  Ok.  I am done with my ranting… but just had to laugh and rant on J.D. Power & Assoc. survey results…  who do YOU ask?!  Big sets of walls?!  Please… both Verizon and J.D. Power & Associates… get in touch with REALITY!

From Ars Technica: Is it legal to stop people from selling their used games?

I hope this won’t happen!  I will boycott whoever does this!  [Hint/Rumor: Microsoft]

===============================================================

Recent stories about potential technical efforts to limit the future playability of used games, as well as commercial efforts to limit the content included with used copies, got us wondering: is it actually legal to hinder someone from reselling a game (or piece of a game) that they legally bought in the first place?

From Autoblog: Video: Brothers make tribute video for mom who died when Explorer rolled

This is not for the faint of heart… as a parent, just seeing this picture brings me to tears… I hope they grow up well knowing their mother loved them dearly… and for crying out loud Ford, correct the huge mistake and own up to your errors and faults!!

Nicole Miller Ford Explorer rollover video

It is with mixed emotions that we share this particular video, which stars two young boys who lost their mother, Nicole Miller, in 2004 after the Ford Explorer she was riding in blew a tire and rolled, causing her fatal injuries.

A sad story indeed, and we’re quite certain everyone involved wishes that Mrs. Miller were still alive and that her boys would not have had a reason compelling them to make the tribute video in the first place. Certainly, the powers-that-be at the automaker hate seeing the Blue Oval’s name brought up again in connection to older Explorers and the well-known lawsuits lodged against it after a number of owners reported rollover accidents.

While acknowledging the tragic loss of life, it’s important to remember that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigated the Ford Explorer and found it just as safe – or just as dangerous, as the case may be – as any other sport utility vehicle of the same era, which, importantly, was before stability control had hit the market in real numbers (and long before it became federally mandated, which was only recently). Independent tests were also carried out, none of which found the Ford Explorer to be particularly unsafe. Vehicles with high ground clearance and four-wheel drive are often afflicted with a higher center of gravity, making them easier to roll than passenger cars that sit closer to the ground.

For what it’s worth, Firestone did recall 14.4 million tires, including the ones fitted as standard equipment on many Ford Explorers built between 1991 and 2000, due to “a safety-related defect” (read: tread separation). But it isn’t Firestone that the Miller boys’ video targets, it’s the Ford Motor Company.

In response to a query from The Huffington Post, Ford spokesperson Marcey Evans said that the automaker was “familiar with this tragic accident and our sympathy goes out to the family involved.” Evans added, “We believe it would be inappropriate for us to comment further at this time as the family has brought a lawsuit against Ford, which is coming up for trial later this year.”

In any case, we’ve included Ryan and Gergory’s video after the break. It’s a heartstring tugger that sets new lyrics to Vanessa Carlton’s hit song A Thousand Miles, so bring tissues.

From Business and financial news – CNNMoney.com: Federal student loan rate set to double

From Droid Life: Web of Tech Patent Lawsuits

This needs to stop. NOW! Do you see Ford (while not the first car maker, it was first to automate the process) suing all other makers for copying its form factor of body, engine, and 4 wheels now, do you, Apple?!  Sheesh…

===============================================================

It seems every other day that we hear Company A is suing Company B over patent infringement. Thanks to PCMag, we can keep track of them all through a set of infographics. These graphs give us a solid representation of the amount of firepower each company holds with their number of patents. As we can see, a lot of these companies have in the tens of thousands of patents – how they keep track of them all, don’t ask us. In the above chart, there are the major filings along with their dates, but we sort of wish they also had the outcome. We love a good Fortune 500 drama, but can’t we all just get along?
