Seeing a good friend is good for the soul

So I got to see one of my best friends of all time…  Paul Minifee is a friend that I wouldn’t trade for anything in the world.  I first met him through David Lee in UT back in ’96!    He’s been an awesome friend and brother in Christ to have…  we’ve both gone through some rough times and it’s always good to know that you got a friend when in need… “You got a friend in me” comes to mind…  (from Toy Story).

Now, he’s a professor at San Diego State University!!  Times sure change… While he was down here, we always do one thing… eat THE best pho in US!  Pho Binh!  Here’s to you buddy!

vi Editor: Back from the dead

So for my job-related reasons, I have acquired an account on the NASA supercomputer, Columbia to run our CFD runs using DPLR to simulate possible cavity damage on the Shuttle.  It’s already a messy process to get onto Columbia since you need to get on it securely.

The kicker is that since the bandwidth is restricted as it goes through JSC’s gateway, running any kind of GUI-based programs including text editors is near-impossible.  This meant that I had to *gasp* get re-acquainted with the old ‘vi’ editor!    For the non-nerds of the world, vi is a text editor for Unix systems that is purely based on keyboard inputs (no mouse or clicks can save you here!) and there are two modes: input mode and navigational mode.

I have been putting off getting used to vi for as long as I could!  Even ‘nedit’ and ‘jot’ are so much easier as it supports Windows’ good ol’ “Cntrl-C” and “Cntrl-V”, aka. copy and paste.    However, to really get going on the supercomputer, I had to finally pick up on vi.  At first, it was dreadful… since there are two modes, you had to remember what mode you were in and it was very rough to get around.

However, there’s a saving grace about this editor.  It’s very powerful once you get over the learning curve.  You see, you can skip loads of lines and spaces, search for texts, replace and repeat with ease.  When editing something repetitive is where this shines.  In nav mode, “.” key represents “repeat last command”.  So you could replace a character with ‘r’ for replacing and then, say, replace with ‘2’.  Then hit ‘/’ key + search text to search for next occurrence, and hit ‘.’ key to repeat the replacement!!

Ah yes…  my life of submitting and running several CFD runs on the Shuttle is now much easier… and dare I say that… *gasp* it’s better than lousy Windows editors!!

Gingerbread House

Well, I saw a good deal on a pre-made gingerbread house that just needed the icing and decorating done so I bought one for the family…  Today was the day to decorate it and here it is…

Not too shabby for a first time, eh?!    With JJ in front of it…

And then Anna…

And finally… the icing queen!!

The million dollar question is…  How long will this house survive?!!

Can you say “Brown Rice Tea”?!!

I’ve been trying to cut down on coffee by drinking some green tea and such… and then one day, I discovered…

And all I want to say is WOW!! It’s very soothing… the brown rice definitely adds well to the touch! The Japanese of the day is “Yamamotoyama”!

IKEA, oh how I love to hate you!

So it’s the Black Friday… I wanted stay far away from the malls and stores…
But we have to eat still and so with the day off, I suggested that we go to Komart.  After having lunch with my good friend, Paul Minifee at Pho Binh, we started to head off in that direction.  Half way there, Soojin suggests a sneaky one… “We could stop by IKEA since it’s on the way…”  Oh how innocent are those suggestions, eh?

Well, so we get there about 1 pm.  Soojin is all lost in the “presence” of IKEA.  This is the one store that she said that she could either work at or live at!!    As much as I do like some of their stuff and how ingenious some of their stuff are, I do hate them for few other reasons…

1.  It’s freakin’ huge!!    It took us nearly 3 hours to get through the store at “relatively fast” pace!!
2.  Sure they’ve got some great stuff for real cheap… but when you get 20 to 30 of such things, they still add up HUGE!!
3.  Did I mention that it’s big??!!

I am not good at shopping… so needless to say, after 3 hours there, I was exhausted!  Soojin did notice that I was about to crash so she felt a bit guilty… but still didn’t stop her!    And after 3 hours with the kids, they also began to get very cranky and  irritating and demanding after all that…  At least, JJ was well distracted with those blue arrows for him to keep searching for.

Whew… I’m tired…  IKEA… How I love to hate you!
