Amazon invests in a self-driving car startup

https://www.engadget.com/2019/02/07/amazon-invests-in-self-driving-car-startup-aurora/

Amazon is clearly interested in autonomy between its delivery drone project and Scout robots, but it’s taking that commitment one step further. The tech giant has participated in a $530 million investment round for Aurora Innovation, a self-driving car startup created by luminaries like ex-Googler Chris Urmson, former Tesla Autopilot leader Sterling Anderson and Uber autonomy co-founder Drew Bagnell. While Amazon hasn’t said what it hopes to gain from the investment, Aurora’s technology may provide some clues.

Like many similar startups, Aurora is focused on developing a driverless system rather than producing full-fledged cars. You could integrate its technology into various vehicles, and companies like Hyundai and VW have already pledged to use Aurora software in their cars by 2021. Amazon could use this for self-driving cargo and courier vehicles, reducing its need for human drivers (like it or not) and speeding up delivery times by keeping products moving around the clock.

With that in mind, any development is likely to be a ways off. An investment isn’t the same as a partnership — it signals intent more than action. Just don’t be surprised if you one day see Amazon-branded robotic vehicles roaming the streets.

Firing 1000 Rockets at 1000 Rockets [Video]

For his 7th million subscriber, Mad inventor Colin Furze decided to fire 1,000 rockets at 1,000 other rockets. The result is… quite explosive to say the least! If you want to jump ahead to the “good” part, be sure to start the video at 4:50. Check it out!

NYPD to Waze: Stop snitching on our checkpoints!

https://www.autoblog.com/2019/02/07/waze-dui-checkpoint-police-nypd-cease-desist/

“Police reported ahead” is a common phrase heard on a drive using the crowd-sourced navigation app Waze. Added to the app in real time by nearby users, it’s one of numerous alerts sent to drivers about upcoming obstacles on a route. Many users view it as a harmless way to avoid getting

speeding tickets

, but others use the app to point out police checkpoints, including those setup for

DUI

prevention. The New York Police Department (NYPD) wants it to stop.

Written about by the

The New York Times

and reported by

Streetsblog

, the NYPD sent a

cease-and-desist letter

to Waze’s owner, Google. It insisted the app’s capabilities should not be allowed and could even be considered illegal.

“Individuals who post the locations of

DWI

checkpoints may be engaging in criminal conduct since such actions could be intentional attempts to prevent and/or impair the administration of the DWI laws and other relevant criminal and

traffic laws

,” NYPD Deputy Commissioner for Legal Matters and lawyer Ann P. Prunty said in the letter.

“The posting of such information for public consumption is irresponsible since it only serves to aid impaired and intoxicated drivers to evade checkpoints and encourage reckless driving. Revealing the location of checkpoints puts those drivers, their passengers, and the general public at risk.”

By design, Waze is not directly at fault, as the application does not have a feature that specifically calls out checkpoints. However, once the police alert is selected, users can then add custom details about why the police are in that location. Waze also has functionality to call out

speed cameras

.

Although this might seem like it is interfering with proper justice and helps those who are potentially breaking the law, the reality is that it’s an advancement in technology that makes word of mouth easier. This is theoretically no different from somebody driving past a DUI checkpoint and group-texting friends or posting to a local Reddit message board. Telling people something exists is not against the law.

Based on a statement given to the the NYT, Google likely agrees and doesn’t sound like it plans to change the app.

“… informing drivers about upcoming

speed traps

allows them to be more careful and make safer decisions when they’re on the road,” Google stated, adding that safety is of upmost importance.

As of the reports, no official legal action has been taken. We will update the story if and when more information surfaces.

SpaceX, Boeing (and NASA) Push Back 1st Test Launches of Private Spaceships

https://www.space.com/43250-spacex-boeing-commercial-crew-test-launches-delayed.html

SpaceX’s new astronaut taxi won’t make its inaugural trip to the International Space Station (ISS) this month after all.

SpaceX and Boeing are developing commercial space capsules — called Crew Dragon and CST-100 Starliner, respectively — to carry NASA astronauts to and from the orbiting lab.

SpaceX had been targeting Feb. 23 for Crew Dragon’s shakeout cruise to the ISS, an uncrewed flight called Demo-1. Starliner was scheduled to perform a similar mission in March. But launch dates for both flights have just been pushed to the right, NASA announced today (Feb. 6). [Crew Dragon and Starliner: A Look at the Upcoming Astronaut Taxis]

“The agency now is targeting March 2 for launch of SpaceX’s Crew Dragon on its uncrewed Demo-1 test flight. Boeing’s uncrewed Orbital Flight Test is targeted for launch no earlier than April,” NASA officials wrote in the status update.

“These adjustments allow for completion of necessary hardware testing, data verification, remaining NASA and provider reviews, as well as training of flight controllers and mission managers,” they added.

The next big box to check after these demonstration flights will be tests of the private vehicles’ emergency escape systems, which would get the capsules away from danger if a problem arose during launch. Boeing plans to run this test in May, and SpaceX will perform its version in June.

Then will come huge milestones — crewed test flights to the ISS. Astronauts haven’t launched to orbit from American soil since July 2011, when NASA retired its space shuttle fleet. Since then, the space agency has been dependent on Russian Soyuz rockets and spacecraft to perform this taxi service.

Crew Dragon’s crew-carrying demonstration is currently scheduled for July, and Starliner’s for no earlier than August, according to the new NASA update. Operational flights will begin sometime thereafter, assuming everything goes well.

The latest delay is far from the first for the commercial-crew program. When NASA inked its big multibillion-dollar deals with SpaceX and Boeing in 2014, for example, agency officials said they expected Crew Dragon and Starliner to be in operation by 2017.

“There still are many critical steps to complete before launch, and, while we eagerly are anticipating these launches, we will step through our test flight preparations and readiness reviews,” Kathy Lueders, NASA’s commercial crew program manager, said in today’s update. “We are excited about seeing the hardware we have followed through development, integration, and ground testing move into flight.”

Facebook Says It Needs to Collect All Your Data to Protect Against Terrorism and Child Abuse

https://gizmodo.com/facebook-scolded-in-germany-but-insists-it-needs-to-col-1832421065

Facebook was slapped with a ruling in Germany today that limits how the social media giant can collect data across its multiple platforms, like WhatsApp and Instagram. And Facebook is not happy about it, to say the least. The company says it’s collecting all of that data for your own good. They’re simply using their…

Classic: The Ol’ Russian Style Magic Carpet Ride

https://geekologie.com/2019/02/classic-the-ol-russian-style-magic-carpe.php

Because apparently one of the last things Russians care about are their own lives, this is a video of a couple guys in their finest summerwear riding a carpet being towed behind a car through the city center of Nizhniy Novgorod in the middle of winter. Now of all the ridiculously dumb, dangerous things I’ve seen people on the internet do in my life, I have to admit this is not one of them I really can’t wait to try this some time.
Keep going for the video.

Thanks to Davie, who agrees for being a magic carpet that rug didn’t look like it was getting much air.
