Flight Scare with Anna

So we got on the flight to DFW (Dallas Fort Worth) and half hour into the flight, Anna comlained of sharp pain in her side.  It was bad enough that she started to cry.  Soojin got scared… her mom had appendicitis and the symptoms seemed to be similar…. pain coming and going.

When we landed, Soojin asked ME what we should do.  Let me just say, it’s freakin’ huge responsibility to be responsible for one life, let alone three!  I wasn’t sure of what to do… but with a child traveling and less than an hour to our connecting flight, I figured it’s better safe than sorry.

So I asked for the paramedics.  They came and started to look at Anna.  She was still complaining of pain.  They didn’t think it was appendicitis and when they had asked me if we wanted Anna taken to hospital, I decided that we’d try to wait it out as our flight now was gone and had to get on a different flight.

At that point, I had missed a call from Paul Minifee.  When I had called back, his father Dr. Paul Minifee, was next to him.  You see, he’s a senior doctor at Children’s Hospital in Houston!  So with such awesome knowledge available, I laid the concerns to him.  He then asked if Anna’s appetite was gone.  She said she was hungry.  He then asked if Anna could touch her toes quickly without bending her knees.  And she could.  Dr. Minifee said that if she had appendicitis, she wouldn’t have appetite nor be able to bend and touch toes w/o pain in the side.  Whew.

Got off the phone.  I held Anna and started rubbing her back… felt bit of knots on her left spine so I massaged that away.  Then everyone (except me) wanted pizza for lunch so we ate that. Anna felt better by this point and when we walked over to the other gate for our new connecting flight, I was worried that we wouldn’t get on…  but I guess the other agent had left note on our case and reason for missing the previous flight ’cause the new one called me as Mr. Jang and asked me about how Anna was doing, and that they’d get us seats soon.

Though they had charged us $60 for luggage ($15 X 4), at least their service didn’t suck.  We finally flew into La Guardia airport and we were welcomed with NYC’s finest drivers and 2 hour traffic.  But we are home.  Thank God.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Electric or Manual Shaver?

Gizmodo has a poll out….

So do you use electric or manual shaver? I use manual ones with replaceable blades. I know my dad and my brother both use electric… I just never gotten used to or liked the electric ones. Disposable ones have always been too crude and rough on your face. But the manual ones with replaceable blades have always been the best compromise, I feel…

What say you?

EDIT: To clarify Carlton’s point, no, I wasn’t referring to the old fashioned long blade.  I mean the newer multi-blade manual shavers.  😀

Two Physical Ailments

So as I biked in again to work today, my legs were in pain… terrible pain.  🙁  The tendons that are right above the knee on the inside of the legs were in excruiciating pain!  I barely got to work in 40 minutes!  The muscles right above the knees were swollen, feeling like about to tear!  I put ice on those and tried to stretch…  so lesson learned?  Stretch, stretch, and then stretch some more!!  Erg… 😡

Second, I started seeing some really dark spots on my right thumb… here’s a picture attempt.

Is this due to some kind of lack of nutrients?!  It’s darker than it seems…  Mom?  Mary?  Sanghee?  Tina?  I need some nurse/doctor advice!!  Or am I just overworrying?

Soojin and the Family in Korea: Update

Thanks to everyone that has been praying for Soojin and the kids. Soojin is feeling well enough that she can attend church, walk couple of blocks, and take the kids to the local library. 😀

Kids are enjoying themselves in Korea… eating all the Korean popsicles (JJ loves “Jaws bar” and Anna loves Lotte’s “Screw bar” – no jokes please). To keep them entertained, Anna has been loving piano lesson (which is mainly learning how to read notes) and both have just started on some kind of art/painting class. Both love that latter one so much that they don’t want to leave!

I also wanted to take this time to thank everyone that has offered meals and weekend “lodging”. PS was the first to buy me a meal when I returned (though his first words were, and I quote, “I missed you Peter! I had no one to pick on!” 😛 Then that weekend, John and Christine took me in for the Saturday, and though John is semi-vegetarian, he cooked me an awesome (medium-rare!) steak!  John and Joanne also invited me over for a meal and offered free room anytime I need it! Andrew also bought me an awesome meal at this nice Italian place near Galleria mall! Joanna has been also super about it… thanks for helping me discover awesome Mexican place! Chung & Celeste always offered meals & room and I would’ve taken their offer if it weren’t for them being over an hour’s drive away! 🙁 It’s great to know that you are taken care of…

Lifebits Update

As many have been asking, Soojin is slowly getting better. She’s been able to attend Sunday services. (yeah!) She takes the kids to the local playground and some days to the local library. But she says that even these outings will tire her out.

Kids are finally missing home… and their daddy! 😀 Call me mean but I was glad to hear that. 😛 They miss their lives here in the States… and Anna is counting down the days till she returns! However, on the plus side, she has been taking “piano lessons”, which is primarily learning how to read music notes. And she’s loving it! 😮 So I am very glad to hear that she is learning something new and enjoying herself in the process… They are watching lots of Korean children’s cartoons… I don’t know how they will adapt once they return to the States… JJ didn’t want to try taekwondo. Oh well…

Speaking of JJ, he’s been showing more and more of OCD (obssessive compulsive disorder) symptoms. Even earlier on, he had to get things done just the way he liked it. He couldn’t leave windows and doors open, and would go and close them. I sure hope it’s a phase… My theory/take is that smart and intelligent people tend to be OCD as well. I know quite a lot of intelligent people and they are mostly like that. I would trade intelligence for social aptitude ANY day! Being able to work with others, and accepting others who are different, and ability to work with different people is what I consider more valuable in society. Of course, it’s not like I want my son to be deliberately failing and/or stupid. By no means! I’m just saying that between intelligence and social aptitude, I’d pick the latter… hands down. Well behaved is included in that as well! 😛

On a more personal note, I was planning on biking to work 4 times this week. However, I didn’t get up till too late on Tuesday and ended up driving to work. I biked in yesterday. But that meant that I’d have to bike in both today and Friday! 🙁 I was hoping to do two days at a time … but realized how weak my will power is. So after asking my Bible study group to pray for some will power, I just moved my lazy ass out of the bed, and dragged my butt out of home and biked in! 🙂

Changing habits is hard. We, humans, are creatures of habits. Breaking free from bad ones is tough enough… but incorporating good habits is not any easier… one day at a time… to God be the glory… and here’s biking in tomorrow (and not giving in!!)!

Adapting to Life: Incorporating Biking

As I attempt to increase the frequency of riding the bike to work this week, it has introduced a new problem: lunch. Or rather, lack of ability to carry lunch to work. 🙁

I believe that in life, one has to always try hard to adapt to the changes that surrounds the person. After all, nothing stays the same forever, and getting too attached to habits of life can only bring in complacency. Last week, I just bought lunches at work cafeteria. There are two problems with this.

  1. Food taste and selection is terrible! It just plainly sucks.
  2. It is too expensive! Trying to eat healthy, chicken salad cost me $7 last week! 😮

I usually pack turkey sandwiches but the plastic container it resides in is too big! That definitely did not fit in my medium sized messenger bag that I take with me to work. It already contains my change of clothes on top of other sundry things.

To really make this healthy, green, and cost-saving habit to take full life, I had to make this lunch happen! Then this morning, it occurred to me. I could just pack individual sandwiches in its own smaller containers! It’s thinner (half the thickness) and would allow to be compact! Engineering at its finest! 😀 So I don’t have to spend too much money to buy lunch at work now! Yeah!

Even in engineering, you have to constantly adapt to different challenges, as new problems always ensue. Here’s to successful biking to work three times this week! Depending on how well this week goes, I may just bike to work all 5 days next week! Here’s to your health.

And for the last part, I wanted to thank all those that cared about my health and thus kept pestering me over and over and over… and over! 😛 That means thanks goes to Soojin, my dearest wife, my mom, and my mother-in-law!! Ha ha ha… Thanks everyone.
