Two Hour Lunch to Pho Binh

Well, today was an adventurous day!

It has been raining and since I didn’t bring in lunch, I felt like eating, what else, but pho!

So Carlton, My (Vietnamese co-worker) and myself decide to go!  It’s pouring as we head out.  Clear Lake City Blvd has two lanes and right lane is flooded.  I-45 is congested due to bad weather and feeder road seemed to be flooded at spots as well.

As we headed off Beltway onto Beamer, I saw that Beamer was heavily flooded and saw a poor Acura Integra stuck in water.  So we headed back onto Beltway 8 and onto I-45 North and took the exit at Almeda Mall.  I was going to make a U-turn when all came to a stop.  There were cars stopped at the U-turn!  I walked out to see what the commotion was… and it was the high tide in the feeder of I-45 Southbound!

So I was worried that we would be stuck here too long… and as I saw some trucks go by, I had an idea.  Time for rocket science to put to work!  Well, fluid mechanics to be exact.  You see, when a vehicle treads the water, it creates a wake in the back and the water level behind it is actually lower temporarily.  So when I saw a truck go by, I decided to tail it!  The water was fairly high and there were moments when I was afraid that I’d get stuck and the car would get flooded.  However, my Commander did just fine and after what seemed like an eternity stuck in water, we were out!!

Finally, we took the Fuqua exit.  However, the adventure wasn’t over yet.  Fuqua was worse in fact.  So after a bit, I got onto the shopping area on the right side and drove through the parking lot and then cross the street to the other parking lot.  Still, in the end, just before Beamer, the water level was just too high.  So we did the only thing possible.  I parked close to the Beamer & Fuqua intersection, got out, and we walked in the knee-high water!!

When we finally reached Pho Binh, we were the first and ONLY customers!!  Hard-core baby!  I’m just glad that we didn’t settle down with Pho 21 nearby!  Yuck!  After the awesome lunch (which My Le paid for since he just had too much fun!), we were given ride back close to my car.  Then we walked back the rest… but then I noticed itching in my left leg!  And guess what… I know the Mission Team is going to get a kick out of this one… I found ants that were biting me!!  What the…  I must have picked up ants in the water while treading!  Doh!  I got rid of about 6 to 8 ants in my legs and finally drove back.

All were fine until we hit near Middlebrook and Bay Area Blvd near work and University Baptist Church.  We tried walking in it and realized it is too deep for my car to get through (not to mention 3 cars, one of which was a van, stranded in the water), so we made a detour through the subdivision and finally got back to work!

The best TWO HOUR LUNCH evah!! Hands down!!

Soojin’s Rollercoaster

Soojin’s rollercoaster is located between Clear Lake City Blvd and Pineloch.  It’s on the southbound side of El Camino Real.  What is it?  It’s a bump at an intersection!  We were dropping off a gift to Soojin’s friend who lived in Korea for 12 years (though she’s half Caucasian and half Chinese!) and who was going to go to North Carolina with her family (she has 4 kids!) for family reunion!  The gift was a box of this newly found ramen called “Teum-sae” Ramen which is rather good and Soojin learned that her friend loves ramen!    Since they were leaving tomorrow morning, we dropped it off after Komart and on the way home, she said to take a slight detour to go through this intersection.

She calls it “rollercoaster”.  Why?  She’s scared to wits of them!  So this drive over a bump is her idea and limit on her “rollercoaster”!  So says to me, “Can you make a left at El Camino?”  I knew then that she wanted her “rollercoaster”.  She then tells me to stay on the right side and go faster!

And as I “fly” over the bump at 45 mph or so, she goes “Woo hoo!”.  Cute.  She’s such unique person.  Please pray for her while I’m gone.  Thank you!  I will miss you honey!

Pirate Kids & Comedians

Now you all know that my son is a “pusher sleeper”. What does that mean? It means that he pushes you while he sleeps … and eventually into a corner! Here’s the proof that my wife took while we were sleeping.

Now onto funnier things. Our local Harris county library, Freeman, has “Family Night” on Thursday evenings. After usual book readings, they usually do some kind of arts and crafts. That night’s theme was pirates so we made pirate hats. Here’s the proof that my kids are pirates! 😛

And to finish it off, here’s JJ with TWO cherry tomatoes in his mouth!! 😀 He’s a character alright. A funny one indeed.

JJ’s “interesting” habits

We all have strange habits.  I bite my lip skin off when they start to chap.    Anna loves her “touching blanket”.   She loves to sleep ON it.  She likes to feel all that oddity popping out on the top of the blanket.  Soojin likes to take the scabs off her heel.

My son is no exception.  Most of know of his sleeping habit … of having to touch our rings on our fingers when he is sleepy or is about to sleep.  It’s kinda cute… until your fingers start hurting.  Still cute.  Well, I noticed another strange habit of his today.  Quite strange but cute.  On our way to the Bible study at Formosan Church, to keep them awake (so they can sleep on the way back and not be wide awake!), I let them watch their favorite cartoon shows (mainly cycle between Dora, Diego, Thomas the Tank Engine, and the Backyardigans.  Well, he must’ve been extra tired because he still fell asleep watching his favorite Thomas.  Then I noticed it.  I didn’t see any of his hands!    Almost worried, I searched a bit only to realize that he put his hands behind his back!  Odd, I thought.

Well, today as he sleeps at home, I noticed that he puts his hands underneath him as he slept.  Oddly, Soojin had to move him and as soon as she lay him down, he slid his hands under the pillow!  I guess he likes to keep his hands warm.  Cute kid.  Great moment.  He’s something.
