The jaw-dropping numbers behind China’s Singles Day

China’s Singles Day has smashed records yet again.

The total value of orders reported by e-commerce giant Alibaba during this year’s online shopping bonanza hit $17.8 billion, easily topping the previous record of $14.3 billion set in 2015. That’s more than Black Friday and Cyber Monday combined.

Here are some of the other jaw-dropping numbers from the online shopping festival:

The 10 most expensive colleges this year

For the second year in a row, this small liberal arts school is the most expensive college in the U.S. when you account for the published “sticker price” of tuition, fees, room and board.

But it could be worth the cost. All students earn degrees in either a science, tech, engineering or math field and are known for landing high-paying jobs at companies like Google, Amazon and Microsoft as soon as they graduate.

And like most colleges, a lot of students aren’t footing the whole bill because they receive scholarships and grants from the school, state and federal government. At Harvey Mudd, about 70% of students are paying less than the sticker price.

Facebook decides that many of us are dead

If you’re reading this, you’re probably not dead. But Facebook might think you are.

Facebook (FB, Tech30) notified some users on Friday that they are deceased, according to widespread reports across social media.

Many people are seeing a banner on certain profiles that reads: “We hope people who love [Mark] will find comfort in the things others share to remember and celebrate his life.”

Not all profiles were affected — I’m still alive according to my pulse and Facebook. But at one point, even Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg was declared dead by his own social network.

It’s unclear what’s causing the mass obituaries, but it’s likely a bug in Facebook’s system.

The company did not immediately return a request for comment.

Pixel Gaming Lamps Sure Brighten Up The Place

Mario, Vault Boy and Mega Man have teamed up to kick off Pixel Pals, a new line of pixel art figures from peripheral maker PDP. They are obscenely collectible.

Just look at the first three, all lined up with their 2xAAA battery powered lamps going. Iconic characters from three of gaming’s greatest franchises, with the promise of more to come. Who’s next? Sonic? The dragon from Adventure? Red Mage?

They also look fine in their boxes, but you really need to open these.

Each Pixel Pal stands at I am guessing around four inches and change tall, and at nearly an inch deep they have no problem standing on their own.

My only wish is that these had some kind of AC adapter or USB power option, so I could keep them lit up at all times without worrying about running out of juice.

New 3DS XL shown for scale.

PDP’s Pixel Pals launch exclusively at GameStop, the toy store that also sells video games, on November 25, with a suggested retail price of $14.99 a piece. Vault Boy sums up my feelings on them quite succinctly.

Auto Industry Fears Trump’s Tariffs Could Add $5,000 To The Price Of A Small Car

Over the course of his candidacy, President-elect Donald Trump has scorned automakers—particularly Ford— who “send jobs elsewhere” by building plants outside of the U.S. Now that Trump will be the next president, the industry is concerned about its copious investments outside of the U.S.

Scientists developed a USB stick that can perform an HIV test

When is comes to HIV tests, a drop of blood and a USB stick may be all patients need in the near future. Scientists at the Imperial College London developed a device with the help of medical testing company DNA Electronics that detects HIV levels in the bloodstream and creates a signal that can be read using a computer or handheld gadget. The disposable testing units could be used to help HIV patients monitor their treatment as well as improve how doctors manage the virus in remote locations.

The compact device monitors the amount of the HIV virus that’s present in a patient’s bloodstream, a measurement that’s essential in keeping tabs on how effective treatment is battling the virus. Monitoring the amount of the virus that’s present in a blood sample can let doctors know if a patient stops taking their medication or if the current course of action has stopped working. Researchers are also hoping that the technology can be used to test for hepatitis and other viruses. DNA Electronics is already using the setup to develop a testing method for sepsis and antibiotic resistance.

The USB stick is not only very accurate, but it can offer results on HIV levels in less than 30 minutes. In fact, the average wait time for results was just over 20 minutes during the research phase. That’s a huge improvement from the current wait time of about three days, mostly due to the fact that a blood sample has to be sent to a lab for analysis. As you might expect, those types of labs don’t exist in certain parts of the world where HIV rates are highest.

Driven by a mobile phone chip, the gadget only needs a small amount of blood to perform its analysis. When the HIV virus is detected in the blood sample, the USB stick triggers a change in acidity which the aforementioned chip transforms into an electric signal. That signal is then translated into a reading for a program on either a computer or other electronic device. During the latest round of trials, the setup tested nearly 1,000 samples with 95 percent accuracy. In the meantime, scientists are hard at work on a cure for HIV, but a solution there could still be a long way off.
