The Nintendo Switch Is Sold Out Everywhere, So Someone Built One From Scratch

https://www.gamespot.com/articles/the-nintendo-switch-is-sold-out-everywhere-so-some/1100-6476109/?ftag=CAD-01-10abi2f

While the Nintendo Switch is also going through a major national shortage right now, it seems that one individual took matters into their own hands and built their very own Switch.

Recently, scalpers have taken to buying up all the Switches in stores and selling them for upwards of $600 each, almost 200% the retail price. In response to both the scalpers and difficulty in finding a Switch in-store, Reddit user Sarbaaz37 has not only built their own Switch out of parts, but has also written a complete guide on how you can too.

The total cost for the build comes in just short of $200, not including assembly costs if you plan to try it yourself. As it turns out a Switch can be made with just 22 parts, all of which are fairly cheap, aside from the logic motherboard.

Of course not everyone has the technical skills to put together such a complicated mechanism, thankfully there are actually some places you can purchase a Switch for a reasonable amount. If you can’t make heads or tails out of this guide, then you are probably better off just buying one in-store.

This technology lets you operate a truck remotely over 5G

https://www.autoblog.com/2020/04/13/5g-remote-truck-operation/

Transcript: Operate a truck remotely. Swedish company Voysys is testing its remote control operating system. “Teleoperation” allows users to control a vehicle remotely. Operators use a dome with video screens or a VR headset to see, and remotes to control the vehicle or machine. The system provides the operator with a 180 degree field of view. Benefits of this tech include eliminating the need for truck drivers to be away from home, and the ability to combat driver fatigue by easily switching operators as needed. The tech could also improve safety by removing operators from dangerous work sites. It can even be used for complex and delicate tasks like operating a timber loading crane. Voysys says that because of low latency teleoperation will feel natural. The tech uses 4G/LTE or 5G towers to connect with vehicles on the road or at a job site. Voysys boasts a glass-to-glass latency time of 75 milliseconds over 4G/LTE, and 40 milliseconds on faster networks.

Windows 10 now supports wireless file transfers to and from Samsung phones

https://www.engadget.com/windows-10-samsung-smartphones-drag-and-drop-073307861.html

Getting photos or files from your computer to your phone can turn into a USB cable and email dance, but Microsoft and Samsung now have a better way. The latest Windows 10 Insider build allows you to simply drag and drop files over WiFi to and from any supported Samsung smartphones like the Galaxy S10 or S20, as spotted by SamMobile.

Microsoft has already started making it easier to work between Android/Samsung devices and PCs. Last month, it introduced copy-pasting from Windows 10 to Samsung phones and it already let you receive notifications and even answer calls from any Android phone. Third-party apps have supported similar features for years (and let’s not forget Microsoft’s ActiveSync for Windows Mobile), but this will make it easier for mainstream users.

All you need is Microsoft’s “Your Phone” app and Samsung’s “Link to Windows.” You can long press the files or photos you want to move from your phone, then select all the ones you want to transfer to your PC. To transfer files from PC to phone, just drag and drop them to the “Your Phone” window.

There are a few caveats. File size is limited to 512MB, so it won’t work to get larger HD movies from your computer to your phone, for instance. Transfers are also limited to 100 files, so sending a large batch of photos from your phone to PC also won’t be completely seamless. Finally, your phone and PC will need to be on the same WiFi network and the service requires Samsung’s Link to Windows 1.5, which isn’t necessarily supported on all Galaxy devices.

Still, I can think of dozens of ways this feature will make my life less of a hassle, considering I have a Galaxy S10 and Windows PC. As mentioned, the feature is only out on the latest Windows 10 Insider build for now, but it should roll out to everyone in the next general release.

Discord Launches Beta to Keep Out All That Background Noise

https://gizmodo.com/discord-launches-beta-to-keep-out-all-that-background-n-1842802534

Discord’s testing a new noise suppression tool to help prevent background noise like barking dogs or the deafening clatter of a mechanical keyboard from drowning out people’s voices.

In a blog post Friday, the popular chat service announced its partnership with Krisp, a service and standalone app that uses machine learning to recognize and quiet distracting background chatter. The feature’s beta began for desktop users today, and a mobile release is currently in the works, according to Discord.

“Have a vacuum running in the background; slam a door; ruffle a bag of chips; keep using your really loud keyboard your friends complain about. They won’t be able to hear it,” reads the post.

As for privacy, a subject of justifiable concern given previous missteps by big tech companies employing AI, Discord clarified that having Krisp enabled doesn’t send any of your data to the company’s servers. “No voice, user, video or any data is ever sent or shared outside of Discord.”

You can toggle noise suppression on and off in the settings menu under “Voice and Video,” as well as during video and voice calls.

As someone whose keyboard is as obnoxiously loud as it is obnoxiously pink, I welcome this quality of life tweak, the latest in a series that Discord has made as more and more people rely on online chat services while practicing social distancing amid this novel coronavirus outbreak.

In Friday’s blog post, the company said its daily number of voice users has increased 50 percent within the United States since the beginning of the year. In countries where residents are under countrywide lockdowns to help curb the virus’s spread, that figure has shot up even further. In Spain, twice as many people now talk on Discord every day compared to the start of 2020, and in Italy, that number has more than tripled. To help all those users stave off cabin fever while holed up in their homes, last month Discord raised the limit on concurrent viewers for its built-in game streaming feature, bumping it up from 10 to 50 people.

Face Mask With Customizable Animated LED Messages

https://geekologie.com/2020/04/face-mask-with-customizable-animated-led.php

This is a video demonstration of one of the animated LED face masks created by Oculus product design manager and owner of fashion x technology store Lumen Couture, Chelsea Klukas. The mask’s message can be customized to your heart’s content, and the electronics are removable for cleaning. They’re available for pre-order now for $90, with shipping in early May, and 60% of profits going to the World Health Organization’s COVID-19 Response Fund. The mask can also be integrated with your smartphone via a Bluetooth app to display an equalizer bar for the music you’re listening to, or your own voice. Me? I’m going to get one and program it with ‘IF YOU CAN READ THIS YOU’RE TOO CLOSE’ in really small font. "You really are an idiot, you know that?" How could I, dumb people aren’t smart enough to know they’re dumb. Personally, it’s easy for me to visualize how far six feet away is from another person because it’s the same distance I have to stand from the urinal.
Keep going for a video.

Thanks to hairless, who informed me he’ll be playing Final Fantasy VII Remake all weekend. Invaluable information.
