Uber launches its first electric scooter service in Santa Monica

https://www.engadget.com/2018/10/03/uber-jump-scooters-live-in-santa-monica/

Uber

Uber is ready to fulfill its promise of launching its own electric scooter service. As of October 3rd, commuters in Santa Monica can use the Uber app to reserve Jump scooters for quick jaunts across town. Like some of the competition, you unlock your two-wheeled transport by scanning a QR code on the handlebars. You can’t just park them anywhere, though — Uber is keenly aware of common scooter gripes and has designated parking zones. The prices are familiar at $1 to unlock and 15 cents per minute (they’re free until October 7th).

The company woudln’t say where Jump scooters will be available next, although the option is rolling out in Santa Monica just weeks after Lyft. It wouldn’t be shocking to see Jump scooters available in Denver and other cities where rival services are thriving and permits are available.

This isn’t the most original move by Uber, but it fits into the company’s evolution from a pure ridesharing outfit into a general transportation service that offers a variety of sustainable travel options. It wants to be your go-to service for as many trips as possible, even if you’re just swinging by a friend’s place. And with competition like Lyft getting into the game, Uber might not have had much choice if it wanted to remain as relevant as its peers.

Google’s Voice Access gives Android users hands-free control

https://www.engadget.com/2018/10/02/google-voice-access-android-hands-free-control/

Google

Google has been working on an accessibility product that lets Android users control their device using only their voice. It has been in beta for two years but Google is now releasing the app globally. Called Voice Access, it allows users to write text, talk to the Google Assistant and navigate through apps using voice commands, and it also offers more fine-grained control than you might expect, like being able to “click” buttons and other controls within an app, for example.

Once Voice Access is activated, you’ll see numbers next to everything on your screen that you can interact with. And you can opt to issue a command using what that numbered item is — like a save button or an options menu — or you can use the number itself, like by saying “click 7,” for example. You can even ask what the number is labeling if you’re unsure of what it is.

Among the available commands are general instructions like “go back,” “show notifications” and “go home.” You can also tell your device to turn on the WiFi or Bluetooth, adjust the volume, open an app or turn off. And when composing text, you can use Voice Access to type, replace, delete, select, cut, copy or paste words, letters and phrases. There’s also the option of formatting certain types of text like email addresses.

Stefanie Putnam, a quadriplegic that worked with the Google Accessibility team on Voice Access said, “After using this product for probably about 10 seconds, I think I’m falling in love with it. You use your voice and you’re able to access the world. It has become a huge staple in my life.” Google also says that while the feature is useful for those with mobility limitations, it could also be desirable for those who are just juggling multiple actions at once and could use some hands-free control.

Voice Access is available now globally, though it currently only supports English commands. Microsoft says it’s adding additional language support in the future. You can download Voice Access through Google Play, find out how to set it up here and learn more about the available commands here.

Stratolaunch Releases New Details About Rocket Engine Work

WASHINGTON — Stratolaunch revealed new details Sept. 27 about a rocket engine it is developing for use on future launch vehicles that will fly from a giant aircraft approaching its first flight.

The PGA engine — its name taken from the initials of Stratolaunch’s founder, billionaire Paul G. Allen — will use liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen propellants with fuel-rich staged combustion and a thrust of 200,000 pounds-force.

That engine, the company said, will have the highest specific impulse, a measure of efficiency, of any engine, but did not disclose a specific value. Liquid-oxygen/liquid-hydrogen is one of the most efficient chemical propulsion combinations. [Stratolaunch Unveils New Rockets to Launch from World’s Largest Airplane]

Stratolaunch is currently working on the preburner for the PGA engine, the smaller of two combustion chambers in a staged combustion engine. In a fact sheet, Stratolaunch said it plans to perform a “full-scale” test of the preburner by the end of this year at NASA’s Stennis Space Center in Mississippi.

While this announcement has provided the most details to date on the company’s engine development plans, there’s been evidence for some time that the company planned to embark on developing its own engines. In 2017 the company hired a former SpaceX executive, Jeff Thornburg, as its vice president of propulsion. It also signed a Space Act Agreement last September to perform engine testing at Stennis.

In August, the company disclosed that it was planning a family of air-launch vehicles that would use the company’s giant airplane. Besides previously announced plans to use the Pegasus XL rocket from Northrop Grumman, the company said it was developing its own Medium Launch Vehicle capable of placing up to 3,400 kilograms into low Earth orbit. A “Heavy” version of that vehicle, with three first stages like the Delta 4 Heavy or Falcon Heavy, capable of placing up to 6,000 kilograms into LEO.

Those vehicles will use the PGA engine, although the company did not disclose engine configurations for those vehicles. The company also didn’t reveal a timeline for the engine’s development, but the company previously said its Medium Launch Vehicle would make its first flight in 2022.

Work on the company’s large aircraft continues at the Mojave Air and Space Port in California, where observers recently spotted the plane performing a taxi test on one of the airport’s runways. Company officials said in April that they planned to perform several more taxi tests before attempting the plane’s first flight, then planned for later in the summer, but have not disclosed an updated schedule.

Amazon may reveal its ad-supported IMDB streaming service this week

https://www.engadget.com/2018/10/01/amazon-reveal-ad-supported-imdb-streaming-service/

REUTERS

Rumors about an ad-supported video streaming service from Amazon have been swirling for a little while now, but it looks like the service is right around the corner. CNBC now reports that Amazon’s IMDB subsidiary will announce the service this week. In August, sources familiar with the matter told The Information that the service, which is said to be comparable to offerings from Roku and Vudu, was tentatively being called Free Dive and would be available to Fire TV users. Amazon has been in talks with at least three major media companies, according to CNBC’s sources, and content will include both movies and past TV shows.

The main draw for Amazon is the advertising revenue that such a service would bring in. While Amazon is now the third-largest digital advertiser, it’s still well behind Google and Facebook in that space, and an ad-supported streaming service could help the company capture more of that market. The new service will reportedly allow for ads both in between content and wrapped around an embedded video player, and advertisers will be able to target their ads using Amazon’s proprietary data.

The service will reportedly be announced as part of Advertising Week.

Tile’s new Bluetooth trackers come with replaceable batteries

https://www.engadget.com/2018/10/02/tile-mate-pro-replaceable-batteries/

Nicole Lee / Engadget

Tile has been a household name in Bluetooth trackers for awhile now, with over 15 million Tiles sold over the past six years. But the one complaint that many customers have had about Tile trackers is that you couldn’t replace the battery; instead, you had to swap in new Tiles every year or so when they ran out of juice. Today, however, Tile is announcing its latest line of trackers will finally have replaceable batteries. Plus, the company is rolling out a new Premium service that promises, among other features, free battery replacements every year.

The aforementioned trackers are a new Tile Mate and a new Tile Pro. The new Tile Mate has an improved Bluetooth range of 150 feet, and is also 50 percent louder than its predecessor. As for the new Tile Pro, that now has 300 feet of range (100 more than the original Pro), and is also 50 percent louder than last year’s model. Flip both of them over, and you’ll see that both have tiny compartments, each housing regular coin cell batteries. The Tile Mate uses a CR1632 model while the Tile Pro uses a CR2032. (We should note here that Tile still sells the Slim, which doesn’t have a replaceable battery. Tile says it’s a bit too thin for that.)

According to Tile, the batteries in both of the models are guaranteed to last at least 12 months each. Just like it does now with the older Tiles, the Tile app will let you know when the batteries are running low. Of course, since the new Tiles use ordinary coin cells, you can just go out and buy the replacement batteries yourself, without having to involve Tile in the process.

But if you’re particularly lazy, or you just happen to own a lot of Tile trackers, you can also sign up for an optional Tile Premium service. For $30 a year (or $3 a month if you’d rather go the monthly route), you will get automatic battery replacement every year for an unlimited number of Tile trackers. This means that every time the app detects that your tracker is running low, it’ll automatically send you a new battery without you having to do anything.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Even if you weren’t to get the new Tile trackers, there are other benefits with the Premium subscription. The service extends the warranty of Tile products from one year to three, and you can also now share a Tile tracker with an unlimited number of people — in case your soccer team shares a communal bag, for example. Another subscriber-only feature is Smart Alerts, where you can set it so that you’ll be alerted whenever you leave the house without certain Tiled items. Other Premium features include a up to 30-days location history and Premium Care tech support.

According to Tile, the Premium service supports all existing Tile trackers as well as partner products like Bose and Skullcandy earbuds (it’s just that the battery replacement plan only works with the new Tile trackers). The new Tile Mate is priced at $25 while the Tile Pro will cost $35 (the Pro comes in a white and black version). Both products are available today. As for the Premium service, you can sign up for a one-month free trial starting today as well.
