This is a video demonstration of The Pilot translation system developed by Waverly Labs. The in-ear devices will cost $129 when they’re available this September and can translate a smartphone-selected foreign language in real-time into your native language with the voice of a robot lady. The languages currently supported are English, French, Spanish and Italian, so you’re shit out of luck if you fall in love with a Korean girl. I’m going to learn so many dirty words! Just kidding, I already know all the dirty words in over 400 languages, some of which aren’t even spoken in the Milky Way Galaxy. â—‰ ✹ ✗ ✍ ✌ ⌖ ✇ ✂ ! Hoho, you know what I just called you? “I’m pretty sure those are just wingdings.” Yeah….it’s cool to pretend I know things though. Ratface!

France’s free coding school is coming to Silicon Valley

For 3 years, Paris residents wanting to learn programming have had access to 42, a school that offers a radical approach to technical education: there are no teachers, no lesson plans… and no tuition fees. As long as you’re between 18 and 30 and thrive in a 4-week coding challenge, you can spend 3 to 5 years mastering software development at no cost and on very flexible terms. Sound good? Well, you won’t have to move to France to give it a shot. The 42 team has announced that it’s opening a 200,000 square foot Silicon Valley-area campus (in Fremont, to be exact), with applications beginning immediately. The first class starts in November.

If you ask the school, this is about fixing a skill imbalance in the US. While the country has taken some steps to improve computer education, 42 believes the American educational system "deprives" companies of the programming-savvy people it needs to innovate. You’d ideally get a steady stream of highly motivated coders ready to cross San Francisco Bay and join startups.

It’s hard to say how well 42’s method works when few if any of its Parisian students have even graduated, but the concept (created by Xavier Niel, who founded the French telecom Free) may not be that far-fetched. As our TechCrunch colleagues point out, some existing students are so determined that they sleep in the hallway — while that’s not exactly healthy, it shows a kind of commitment that you don’t always see in college. If you see a sudden surge in young Bay-area tech talent a few years from now, you’ll know who to thank.

Harvard engineers designed a ‘soft wearable robot’

A team of engineers from Harvard University’s Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering have moved one step closer to a consumer version of a soft, assistive exosuit that could help patients with lower limb disabilities walk again. The Wyss Institute announced today that the university is collaborating with ReWalk Robotics to bring its wearable robotic suit to market.

The soft exosuit was designed by Dr. Conor Walsh, who also happens to be the founder of the Harvard Biodesign Lab, along with a team of roboticists, mechanical and biomechanical engineers, software engineers and apparel designers. What really makes the Wyss exosuit stand out from other exoskeletons and robotic suits, is its form-fitting and fabric-based design. Instead of a heavy, rigid frame, the exosuit uses small but powerful actuators tucked in the belt to assist the wearer’s legs in a more natural way. While the setup might not be powerful enough to fight off Xenomorphs, it is a much more elegant solution for stroke, MS and elderly patients who still have partial mobility, but need additional assistance.

"Ultimately this agreement paves the way for this technology to make its way to patients," Walsh said of his teams partnership with ReWalk. According to Harvard, the exosuit’s development has already had a lasting impact beyond those medical applications as well. As the announcement puts it, the team’s work has "been the catalyst for entirely new forms of functional textiles, flexible power systems and control strategies that integrate the suit and its wearer in ways that mimic the natural biomechanics of the human musculoskeletal system."

Point your phone at an equation and Mathpix will solve it

Math isn’t everyone’s strong suit, especially those who haven’t stretched that part of their brain since college. Thanks to the wonders of image recognition technology, we now have Mathpix, an iOS app that lets you point your phone camera at a problem and calculates solutions in seconds.

The interface looks like any standard camera app: simply drag the on-screen reticle over the equation and the app solves it and provides graph answers where appropriate. More useful is a step-by-step guide offering multiple methods to reach a solution, making this a bona fide educational tool. It uses image recognition to process problems and pings its servers to do the mathematical heavy lifting, so it likely requires an internet connection to work.

Mathpix was envisioned by Stanford PhD student Nico Jimenez, who was advised by Stanford grad Paul Ferrell. The app’s other developers are high schoolers Michael Lee and August Trollback, which is impressive for an app that claims to be the first to visually recognize and solve handwritten math problems.

Google aims to launch its consumer Project Ara phone in 2017

Despite some grim portents last year, Google’s "Project Ara" modular smartphone is far from dead. For starters, it now has its own business unit within Google’s mysterious Advanced Technology and Projects (ATAP) group, and the nearly magical modular hardware we’ve been anticipating for years is indeed getting closer. ATAP Head of Creative Blaise Bertrand confirmed at Google’s I/O conference today that a new developer phone will be available in Q4 of this year with a "thin, light, beautiful" consumer Ara phone to follow in 2017.

Considering the ATAP team’s early progress, it seemed for a while that the predicted launch in 2016 was still a possibility. Still, some time away from the spotlight seems to have done the entire project a lot of good: The developer version showed off on stage today was considerably sleeker than iterations we’ve seen in the past. The modules used to be separated from each other by a thick metal grid, for instance, a technical necessity that didn’t look so great. Now, there’s essentially no boundary between the modules, lending the phone a more unified — if still eclectic — look. The first batch of modules seem mostly flush with each other (remember the old Ara’s camera hump?), which only helps the phone look more premium.

The new Ara frame supports up to six modules, which form what Google calls the "world’s first UniPro network" with the phone. Don’t worry: Future frames can be larger or smaller, and future modules will also be compatible with earlier Ara devices. Most importantly, it seems much, much easier to install modules and start using them. All you have to do is plug one in and you’re good to go — the process doesn’t even require a reboot. Ejecting them is simple too, if a little more involved: You’ll have to jump into the settings app and select which module you want to eject. Once done, the module physically pops up from the back of the device. You’ll even be able to eject modules with voice commands like "OK Google, eject the camera."

Maybe the biggest thing to remember is that Project Ara is only as good as the modules available for it. Thankfully, the ATAP team still has a considerable number of partners either interested in, or actively developing, such smartphone add-ons. The list for now includes E Ink (for tiny secondary displays), Toshiba (maybe for additional storage?), Gotenna (for potential off-the-grid communications) and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment (for God knows what). Alas, developers who sign up for their pre-release kits might not get to play with many of these — we’re told the dev units only ship with a few modules.

Chromebooks Just Killed the Tablet

If you are at all considering an Android tablet purchase at the moment, feel free to stop. I say that because in a couple of weeks, Android apps and the Google Play store will arrive on select Chromebooks. By the end of the year, those same apps will arrive on dozens and dozens of additional Chromebooks at varying prices and in a variety of forms, some of which can emulate a tablet experience. This major move of Android apps onto Chromebooks from Google has all but eliminated the need for Android tablets to even exist.

Let me explain. 

Tablets were created years ago as bigger screened versions of our smartphones because we all thought that on a bigger screen, you could do more, become more productive, and maybe even get rid of your laptop. That, of course, hasn’t happened because tablet operating systems (or blown up versions of Android and iOS) are pretty simple in form and lack the powerful multi-tasking a traditional computer can offer. Sure, they may offer better mobile media experiences because they are often more portable, but the lack of powerful features have made them difficult choices over a Macbook or Windows laptop. With Chromebooks now running Android apps along with Chrome OS, I think we may be stepping into a world of pure mobile bliss that finds the perfect middle ground of laptop and tablet.

Yesterday, Google showed the media Google Play and Android apps working seamlessly on a Chromebook. The apps run just like you would hope they would run on your phone or tablet, but they do so in stand-alone windows, sort of like you see on any other computer. Just keep in mind that this isn’t the limited PC app selection you probably complain about – this is the Google Play app selection with millions and millions of apps that you have been using for years. On Chromebooks, all of your favorite apps (Evernote, Instagram, Facebook, Robinhood, Alphabear, Houzz, Wunderlist, etc.) are going to be available and will just work.

Wondering how that’s going to play out? According to Google, Android apps on Chromebooks can be displayed in 3 different window sizes, users can multi-task between them in moveable windows along with the desktop Chrome browser, they gain access to keyboard, mouse, and touch input, can file share with Chrome OS, and even show notifications! In other words, you get everything you want from Android apps and then some, because you can run them while doing PC-like multi-tasking.

Google showed us examples that included editing an image in the Android Photoshop app before saving it and then adding it to a document in Microsoft’s Word for Android, all on a Chromebook running Chrome OS. They played games on a touch screen too. They even made mention of being surprised that Facebook Messenger’s chat heads works out of the box. That means the days of you having to keep using your phone for specific apps that aren’t available on your computer and your computer for everything else, are over with, assuming you own a Chromebook.

So how is this going to kill the tablet?

Outside of the fact that you will now have the bigger-screened software and Android experience the world was asking for, Chromebooks will kill the tablet because Chromebooks are only getting better with each passing month, yet they aren’t necessarily getting any more expensive. Google has its ridiculously priced Pixel line, but you can get into a convertible Chromebook that folds flat like a tablet for under $300. Look at the Chromebook below. That’s the Acer Chromebook R11, with a foldable design that turns the notebook-esque device into a touchscreen tablet when needed. It has a 11-inch multi-touch display, 2GB RAM, 32GB storage, Intel Celeron processor, USB ports (both 2.0 and 3.0), SD card reader, and 9.5 hour battery life. It costs $279 and will be one of the first on the planet to get access to Google Play.

Yep, I’ll pause for a minute while you run off to the Google Store to buy one.

Are you starting to smell the death?

Few make Android tablets these days because they are a tough sell. Android just never became a great bigger-screened operating system and failed to prove to doubters that buying a tablet running Android, was a worthy investment. With all of our favorite Android apps coming to Chromebooks that can become tablets, you will be getting the Android experience you always hoped for on a bigger screen, only it’ll also be affordable.

Oh, you will also never have to worry about slow updates (Google provides and applies them automatically on Chromebooks) or security issues (those are patched automatically too).

The future will only get brighter too. Because Google Play has come to Chromebooks, my guess is that we’ll see innovation ramp up around design (detachable displays, anyone?) and companies pushing forward with even higher-spec’d devices than the sub $300 options you see today. Chromebooks will kill the Android tablet and that’s probably for the best.
