Lazareth LMV 496 jet-powered flying quad cycle teased

https://www.autoblog.com/2018/12/24/lazareth-jet-flying-quad-cycle-video/

It must be getting increasingly difficult to get the internet-obsessed masses to sit up and take notice, even for a boutique brand like

Lazareth

, which has made a living by blowing

motorcycle

enthusiasts’ socks off with crazy contraptions for well over a decade. Some of Lazareth’s memorable machines have had three wheels,

others four

. Where do you go from there?

Enter the Lazareth LMV 496, which will apparently replace those wheels altogether with what appears to be a quartet of small jet turbine engines. If you were a kid in the ’80s who grew up dreaming of time travel with

Dr. Emmett Brown

, you’re already familiar with the premise of Lazareth’s teaser. The wheels flip around, the jet engines spin up to speed, flames shoot downward, and the craft lifts skyward.

We have no idea if this thing is real, or if it’s merely a concept. Either way, it’s sweet. And it’s coming on January 31, according to the text below the

YouTube video

. You can bet we’ll be watching to see what happens.

How to Download All Your Instagram Pictures

https://lifehacker.com/how-to-download-all-your-instagram-pictures-1831281692

The revelation this past week that Facebook has been sharing what you do on the site with other companies like Microsoft and Amazon has led a number of us to start considering (perhaps not for the first time) deleting Facebook and other apps owned by the company like Instagram and WhatsApp.

If you delete Instagram, your photos go along with it. That is, unless you back them up first.

Downloading your Instagram photos and creating a backup somewhere is a good idea in general, even if you’re not considering leaving the platform. That said, if you are considering leaving then it’s something you definitely want to do. Here’s how to make it happen:

First, launch the Instagram app on your phone and then tap on the profile button at the bottom right side of the page. From there, tap the Menu button (the three line stacked on top of each other) at the top-right of the screen and select “Settings” from the drop-down menu (it’s at the very bottom).

Toward the middle of the next menu, you’ll see a listing for “Data download.” Select that and then tap “Request download.”

The download won’t happen instantly. Instead, Instagram will email you when your photos are officially ready to download and will include a link for you to grab them. The process can take up to 48 hours, so strap in and be ready to wait.

Once you’ve got everything backed up, you can delete your account freely without worrying that you’ll lose a favorite pic.

This Video Explains Everything You Need to Know About My Favorite Science Fiction Superstructure

A Dyson sphere!

Superstructures—giant, impossible machines or buildings, popular in science fiction, more or less impossible in reality—are the absolute best. They are my jam. The Dyson Sphere is the best one.

(To be fair: it’s possible, at some point in the future, that people could build one of these, and advanced civilizations may have, for all we know, already built them. Bear with me here.)

The Dyson Sphere is, simply put, a structure that fully captures a star inside of it, letting its owners harvest the infinite energy of the sun as a power source. It rules. So, let’s say you want to build one of these spheres. That’s where this video comes in. In a brief ten minutes, Kurtzgesagt—In a Nutshell runs down what a Dyson Sphere is, and how you, entrepreneurial future inventor you, would go about building one.

Well, what are you waiting for? Superstructures don’t build themselves. It just takes time, and ingenuity, and solving several intractable problems. Get to it.

IBM fingernail sensor tracks health through your grip

https://www.engadget.com/2018/12/22/ibm-fingernail-sensor/

IBM Lab

The strength of your grip can frequently be a good indicator of your health, and not just for clearly linked diseases like Parkinson’s — it can gauge your cognitive abilities and even your heart health. To that end, IBM has developed a fingernail sensor that can detect your grip strength and use AI to provide insights. The device uses an array of strain gauges to detect the deformation of your nail as you grab objects, with enough subtlety to detect tasks like opening a pill bottle, turning a key or even writing with your finger.

From there, the sensor sends its data to a smartwatch (in this case an Apple Watch) where the AI kicks in. Machine learning on the watch can detect various signs of Parkinson’s, such as tremors, bradykinesia (slow starts to voluntary movement) and dyskinesia (reduced voluntary movements). IBM added that it can use a neural network to accurately detect finger-written digits, which could help identify health issues associated with cognitive functions and motor skills.

While the sensor was initially developed with Parkinson’s in mind, IBM clearly sees a range of uses that could include detect the development of numerous diseases as well as the effectiveness of treatments meant to slow those conditions. It has also served as the foundation of a communication device for quadriplegics. There’s no mention of when this sensor could become a practical reality, but it at least makes sense. Skin sensors are frequently problematic for older people, whose hands and arms might be relatively fragile. A nail sensor would sit on a relatively safe area where you don’t have to worry so much about removal or a loose fit.
